ok a few of you might know im starting a tafe course inwhich i will be given a cert 1 in mechanics.. ie its a prevoc mechanics course. so it shoud take somme time off my apprentiship.. anyway i have to find a mechanic to do some work experience at. I asked the one mechnic i thought would say yes and he said no. I have 1 more to ask then im all out of ideas. So basically im lookinng for a mechnic on the sunshine coast that i can do work experience at. Its 1 day a week then there is a 1 week block at about a weeks in and then a 3 week block later on. I really need to get this sorta ASAP. So any help would greatly be appreciative.

Michael,
Are you doing a cert 1 in automotive mechanics or diesel mechanics? For memory the prevoc course is not stream specific, although it is now a good 11 years since I left TAFE and the knowledge of their courses behind!!

My advice to you is to ask your instructor if it is acceptable to do work experience at a diesel mechanics shop.
A diesel mechanic can earn up to $100k per year (although it is tough work), whereas a auto mechanic is seriously limited in $$$. See if you can get a diesel shop to take you on as a work experience dude.
If you then can jag yourself an apprenticeship as a diesel mechanic you will be in with a chance.
By the way, you need to care how dodgy a place is because if they are training you in the field of mechanics, you will also end up dodgy if they are dodgy.
Call some people like Hastings Deering, Cummins, Komatsu. Basically get the phone book and start calling every diesel shop around your area, do up a resume with what you want to achieve and be ready to make appointments to talk to the revelent managers of each business. Be professional and be certain of your goals.
Good luck Michael,
