Hey guys. I have a VY V6 Acclaim. About 8 months ago i went to work one morning & it started missing badly. Took to a mechanic shop & their diagnosis was that these needed to be replaced: Cam angle sensor, DFI module, All coil packs, leads & plugs were done & EGR valve. The cost was $1350 & after this was done by the mechanic, the car has been missing at 80 or 2500 rpm with a hot engine & now the engine at cold will not do it since it has been repaired by the mechanic. I then spoke to the mechanic again and they want more money to put it back on the computer to see what the problem is. This car is basically used to travel to and from work and occasionally family outings but it has never gone 80kms/hour. Can anyone give me some advice as what my next option will be before i have to take it back to the mechanics. Thank you for your time. Your sincerely Tony
The best advice I can give you is to stay away from that mechanic, he is either a thief or a mechanic's arsehole. Are you sure he replaced the stuff he said he did? Usually a miss at around 80 is caused by a bad lead, sometimes spark plugs, so check the plugs and make sure the leads are firmly attached. Start with that. Spark plug gap is 1.5mm. To check lead resistance: http://forums.justcommodores.com.au/vt-vx-holden-commodore-1997-2002/48952-spark-plug-leads-vt.html (I'm sure VY will be the same).
I had changed the leads and plugs .a little while before it broke down, Repco leads Bosch plugs gap done too 1:5. When i got car back everything was new that they put on ,i had a good look, plus they kept all old parts and gave too me. everything was repco parts except E.G.R valve that was genuine holden part.at the moment its the best that its ever run smooth ect etc, just that mild miss at 80 it feels like 1 cyl only doing it. As for the repco repair shop i got a call 5 days after being repaired too see how it was running and i told them about it missing which it never done before, so they wanted another $110 too check it again. But if you accelerate up too 80 and over it wont do it.
Auto or manual ? - If I'm reading you correctly, my guess if it's pinging at dead on 80 there's an engine management issue ( given the hardware you already had replaced ).
