Ok as far as brands go, each one has its positive and its negative. From what I've heard, the new Pioneer range has lost a considerable amount of it's previous quality. Nevertheless some people swear by it and are very caught up in brand loyalty. There is nothing wrong with going all one brand, but there is the other thing to consider where there may be something better out there from a different manufacturer. Personally, I am a big fan of Alpine, though at the same time, JL Audio, Rockford Fosgate, Jaycar's Response range, Cadence and JBL are also really good.

Good point. I recently did a full stereo upgrade in my car, everything got replaced, and based on the car and the type of music I wanted the stereo tuned for, it wouldn't have made sense to go all one brand. Sound quality was the priority. Put together a system with a clarion head unit, MB Quart front splits and alpine rears powered by a clarion 4-channel amp, 2 x 12" Alpine type S subs powered by alpine mono amp. I listen to quite a bit of heavy bass and the 2 s-types have always been more than enough. A bit of mix of brands but the sound is fantastic, much better than any of the other setups I've had.

Hope that helps!

So in short, brand loyalty can be your undoing. Look around and try alot of different stuff before you make an executive decision on what gear you want. The Headunit is probably going to be the easiest thing for you to choose. This is because it is just like choosing a phone, if you like the look of it, the feel of it, like what it does, and it has a good review, then go ahead and get it.

if you want loud you cant really go past Digital Designs
Other brands to maybe look into that arent quite the norm might be SPL Dynamics, and RE or even Mach 5 Audio

i find it interesting that I still see people recomending Oz Audio even though it is no longer available in Australia.

As others have mentioned go to a specialist store and see what they suggest.
Does the $3k include install?
