my general preference is to keep all the speakers the same brand including the subs

what do u guys reckon i should go for?

you have at lot of choices for that sort of money. IMO you should be able to get something better than Alpine Type R.

My best advice would be going to a specialist car audio store and seeing their recommendations. Seeing as you're in Sydney try FHRX Studios.

Also check out this thread for suggestions.

There are heaps to choose from..
I like Boston, Eclipse, Digital Designs... others worth looking at include Focal, Hertz, Dynaudio, Morel, Audison.. actually basically pretty much anything they stock. Best bet would be to send them an email outlining your budget and what you want from the system.

Ok as far as brands go, each one has its positive and its negative. From what I've heard, the new Pioneer range has lost a considerable amount of it's previous quality. Nevertheless some people swear by it and are very caught up in brand loyalty. There is nothing wrong with going all one brand, but there is the other thing to consider where there may be something better out there from a different manufacturer. Personally, I am a big fan of Alpine, though at the same time, JL Audio, Rockford Fosgate, Jaycar's Response range, Cadence and JBL are also really good.

Anyway, onto your system. This really depends on what sort of music you like, you can get a specific set up suited to a specific style of music. In my case, I have a sound system that is suited far more for Rock and Metal rather than Electro and Trance. It really depends on what you want, and if you are looking to be specific then I would recommend you go and see a car audio professional. Preferably not from JB HI-FI, because they're knowledge only goes so far, and some people have had bad experiences.

**** yeah, for around $3000 you aren't limited much mate. Go to a decent car audio place though, don't let Autobarn or any of those places touch your car. For the cash you are spending you can get some good quality gear including installation if you talk them down a bit.

JL, Focal, Eclipse, Rockford Fosgate, Ozaudio and Boston are a few good names. But if you would like some change from your $3k, you will easily be able to get an Alpine Type R system fitted for under $3k. That will get you a decent head unit with 3 RCA input, set of 6" splits for the front, some 6" components for the rear, a decent 4 channel amp for the splits and rear 6" speakers, 12 sub in box and a monoblock for the sub + wiring etc fitted. Just ring them and ask what they can do for you for $3k, then look at packages cheaper than $3k and see what tickles your fancy.

Most car audio places will do you a good price on a package with installation.

Good luck!
