Check water level of course !, but sounds like thermostat.

More info needed: if needle goes straight to HOT then it could simply be the wire to the sensor disconnected or shorted....if takes 5 minutes then I'd go with thermostat stuck.
If there is no coolant the gauge will not register as it is immersed in coolant...no coolant no work.

I'd be checking the wire & connection for the temp gauge sender, its a little black rectangular plug/clip and a green wire from memory, located just below the thermostat housing. You could start the car up first thing and put your hand on there to check the temp, but from memory if the gauge is showing full HOT then the sensor/wiring is shorting to earth.

Well when I wiggled it around for abit it stoped, but if it is the sensor and the wiring will i have to just get new sensor or do i have to rewire. The leads as on positive and earth? I'd it complicated? Or an easy job?
