Hey guys, im looking at getting a new (second hand) car in the coming weeks/months, and need some advice on what direction i should take. Ive been doing alot of reading on this site, so hopefully i wont be asking too much of the same crap thats been asked before. basically, im after a manual stock standard SS(V) that i wanna get supercharged later on down the track (not too much later i hope). before i run out and buy the first car i find, im after as much info as i can get to make sure i buy the best car for what i want. After a bit of reading it would seem that the most popular option for a supercharger would be a 1.9L or 2.3L PD blower, so thats pretty well sorted. as far as engine choice goes, its looking like the L98 is what ill be wanting, due to it not having any of the DOD crap included as in the LS2 or L76. LS3 would be great, but the car will end up costing way more than i want to spend. so im pretty much limited to a 2008 - 2012 SS or SSV or SSV Redline. my first question is are there any mechanical differences in brakes / transmission / diff / suspension or anything else that will make any particular model / year a better option for a starting car? with that out of the way, onto the mods i wanna get done. from what ive been reading, the eaton 1900 supercharger should be big enough for the 6L engine, and should give better low down response and less lag than the 2300, and ill be looking at an intercooled kit. with either kit, im going to need an upgraded exhaust and fuel system. what size extractors/exhaust should i be looking at for this application (wont get into brands yet as that can be sorted later). what fuel system requirements will a kit like this need. just bigger injectors? or will i be needing a bigger pump too? what top-end upgrades are recommend when supercharging? the car will have to remain perfectly drivable and as reliable as possible. will upgrading valve springs / lifters be a good idea? how much difference will a cam to suit the blower make? next up, im pretty sure the standard clutch wont like the extra torque, what do u recommend there? how much should i be expecting to pay for supply fit and tune of the blower kit / full exhaust / fuel system / cam / top end upgrades and clutch? all up im hoping to only spend about 20k on top of the cost of the car. is that wishful thinking? if anything im looking at getting done is a bad choice, or unnecessary, let me know why, and how ud do it instead. obviously i will be asking all these same questions to a couple of the performance workshops around here, but i just wanted to get a bit of an idea of what some other ppl think about all this so i can at least sound like i have a bit of an idea like i know what im talking about so now for the next question, can anyone recommend some places in WA where id be able to get all this done? only place i have really heard of is Marks Workshop, who seem to be fairly well known, but surely there are other places as well that could be an option? from what alot of ppl have been saying on these forums, i should probably look at getting all this done by walkinshaw for a better chance at retaining any remainder of the factory warranty, however some workshops over east also provide their own warranty with their kits (like kpm). any places like this in WA / Perth? thanx for any help, hopefully im not talking too much crap
At the end of the day champ, its what you decide to do. There are HEAPS of threads that may help you regarding what you may want. Good luck with it.
for what model/year got what have a read here;Holden VE Commodore / Calais the only mistake in this link is it should read ser2 sept 2010 not 09
Thanks for the replies so far DeadxPatriot - Yeh ive been slowly reading through alot of the other relevant threads, but theres not as much info on supercharging as there is on other mods like cams. Just trying to make sure i make a well informed decision before going out and blowing this sort of cash AD07 - Yeh 20k was what i was expecting, but its looking like it could blow out past that.... but like u say, theres no point getting a blower kit if im gonna do a half assed job. will prob be better off with just a cam/tune. would much rather the blower tho bladerunner - thanx for the info. MY10 SSV is what im hoping to get. Redline edition will be out of my price range i think...especially if ill need more than 20k for mods If anyone knows of a list of workshops in WA that would be worth contacting for this sort of work, that would be greatly appreciated. there just doesnt seem to be as many over this side of aus as there are over east. either that or im just not looking hard enough also, when buying second hand, is there any way to find out whether a car has had repairs done under warranty? im scared of ending up with a lemon
