A new ad aimed at advising parents not to buy older model cars for their kids has recently started playing on TV. It involves filming of a staged head-on between two Corollas, a 1998 model and a 2015.
The difference in the extent of damage between the two cars is graphic, with the 98 model suffering extensive body deformation back to the "b" pillar.
Now, back in 98, Toyota would have been crash testing their cars but I'm wondering how hard the test impacts were. Given that modern cars were designed with progressive crumple zones to absorb the impact and protect the occupants in a head on, it seems as though the 98 model also had progressive crumple, but it was designed to protect the taillights. Too bad if you were a passenger in the car. Anyone else get that impression after seeing the ad?
