Just wondering if anyone has been down the path of completing an apprenticeship only to then change their career path later on in life?
im sure many people on here have and just wondering if anyone would have any idea on possible career paths
im a qualified electrician with about 6 year exp including the apprenticeship its self, work is slow and new job opportunities arnt great or many about.
iv been considering perhaps looking into doing an engineering degree or something else? im not sure if any prior learning would be applicable?
have a decent back ground in automotive and marine stuff but nothing on paper... just experience fixing friends stuff basically...so basically if i was too pursue this idea id have to start from the bottom again and work my way up.
anyway just putting it out there, pretty broad demographic on here with alot of people who im sure have been down this path.

any input would be great or hey if you just want to take the piss in some way please do.
cheers

I was a draftsman back in the day, then that got quiet and I got the flick. Got a job as an electrical contractor, got offered an apprenticeship. Ironically, getting paid more now to put cable ties on than I was to design air conditioning systems for commercial buildings.

Go figure.

I'm in the process of trying to find a new career. Been a baker for about 15 years, Am bored with it now.
Just recentley finished doing 2 years civil construction as a labourer, Wouldn't mind doing more of it and getting some qualifications. But it isnt easy finding a company wanting to take someone on.

go for the engineering degree of some descript.
i know its what im going to do, well atleast start before the elec apprenticeship is over.

or maybe some night schooling, get a taste for other courses via that to see what you like.
or just to expand your knowledge.

An engineering degree is a good thing to have behind you if you can handle the maths and physics involved.

Avoid working for council and other companies that have heaps of engineers sitting in cubicles on low wages and specialise in something.

If I hadn't gotten into mining/geotechnical engineering, I would have gone into marine engineering which is offered in Tasmania.

I kinda disagree a bit.. Councils/government are excellent places to start.. That way you can get known by the contractors.. If you're a hard worker and they see it job offers follow..

You can do scholarships or cadetships through government departments for engineering..
Worked for me..
Have worked full time since finishing highschool.. Did my trade then started studying and got a cadetship..
