My VS V6 auto is stuffed. I have been offered a reco 4L60E 7HDD which is the original spec for $2000 installed. But another place has offered a new 4L60E 9HND which they said is the version used in the supercharged commodores. They are offering it for $$2400 installed. Both are a fair bit of dough to spend on a VS but I plan to keep the car as it has a new donk. Is the new unit(he swears it is new and still in the box) at $2400 good value and worth the extra $400 over the reco. Any thoughts welcome. Also I'd be interested if anyone knows what the spec difference is I assume the torque converter might be a bit tougher but really don't know much about them.
I was under the impression that VT onwards (98 on) did not fit the VS (95 to 97) and that to make them fit you needed to do a mod of some sort. The 9HND indicates made in 1999 I think so that is VT. For what its worth, in a standard VS you only need a standard auto - thats what they designed to run with - the original one in your car has lasted 10 years so....
I'd have to agree with Hako... I'm sure that I have read in various threads on here that whilst the VT box does fit, there is something different about it, and it does require some fiddling around to get it sorted so that it runs in the VS. I'd probably be inclined to go with the reconditioned box, providing that it has been fully reconditioned, and that there is a decent warranty on it too. The 7HDD designates that its from a 1997 model vehicle, so there was still plenty of VS series being made then. Better to be safe than sorry. Someone on here might be able to answer this question though, since VS statesmans were still made up to 1999 and utes up until 2000 or a bit later, which autos did they run with? Was it a VT one with some sort of modified setup?
