New starter problems wont turn off

Ive just replaced the starter motor on my vz wagon 2005. BUT as soon as i connect the battery the starter whirs .The key is off. It sounds like a very fast spin ...its not engaging with flywheel or id hear that wouldn't i ?

Wired back to front and bypassing solenoid? If it's spinning without engaging it is probably going in reverse.

how can it be wired back to front ? two wires one is a female clip smaller wire the other bolts onto the solenoid heavier wire?

Have you looked at your start relay? Maybe its shorting out?

I would think that as its new and “fails” straight out of the box then it is faulty.
Remove it and connect to battery and do not connect the small solenoid plug.
If it spins then it is faulty.
Battery plus to heavy duty bolt and battery minus to case.
