4jj1 or 1kdftv are the go reliability wise if you’re looking into second hand 4 cyl common rail diesels. I’d own other brands but only if under warranty. Rangers are a nice car but certainly have their (expensive) issues.
yeah a ranger might be out of my price range, still would be nice to get one though. but wary of the problems

Best to figure out what you want to use it for and go from there.
Colorado's are nice (just ask Reaper) and their offshoot the DMax is also not bad to consider.
And seeing "Melbourne" as location, one thing to consider is toll roads as they come under light commercial not a car.

Was in a similar position were a dual cab or a van would have been ideal, except was driving daily on Citylink/Eastlink.
Went from $25 a day in tolls up to $41 if it was in a dual cab.
yes, that is something i need to heavily consider since i was going to use this to travel more and that meant going to other states and using the toll ways as another means of going there.

it came down to 2 options,
an 09 VE manual clubby 80:000kms for 29k
or the XR5T. as i was in the process of talking to the guy about the clubby, he sold it to another person. so it left me with this choice.
i have driven her and it goes well. it exciting really. first manual car
