Okay, on other posts currently running, it seems pretty obvious that Nelson is not seen as the sort of leader the Libs need to lead to victory at the next Federal election in 2010. Who do you believe should be the leader and why?
Costello, he is clearly the best man for the job. He should of been given the reigns 3 years ago after the last win.
Certainly agree with that comment. Howard became arrogant and convinced that he was the best (only) one who could win the last election. Fail. Costello definitely has the economic credentials - it's just a pity that the electorate seemed to distrust him for some reason. Perhaps it's because nobody ever likes the Treasurer?
Yes costello is the obvious choice. In the current crop not much stands out really, mabye Malcom could do a better job.
What about evil eyes?. Can't trust Costello, When Howard finally wanted to hand him the rains, It was already to late, That leads me to believe he wanted him to earn it on his own merrits, Rather then be handed it, Now he has got to be a man take the rains now and lead this party, Or else sit on the back benches, And don't expect an easy path, Earn it.
Turnbull is un-electable. Most of the public think he is a supa-rich snob. Joe Hockey is an outside chance though. Costello would be their best bet. It is the best opportunity he has ever had though. Even if Howard handed things over to him I think they sill would have lost the last election. Reaper
Who ever it is - Turnbull, Costello or Hockey - they will need to drag the mid wealthy Aussies to their side of the fence - no easy job with all of Costellos hard treasury work going down the gurgler right now. And the property boom which made lots of Aussies think they were well off (for a few years anyway) not going to help them this time. Maybe the mining boom will do it - but in WA where the mining boom has been on for a few years now is showing signs of stalling. With the performance of the Rudd government being questiond by the people that know how a country should be run, the Libs are a shoe in to win by miles in the next election
i think Costello lost a lot of fans when he came out and said that howard promised him the top job a few years back..
Pfffft! Thats a great reason to not like someone... You do realise Costello is largely to thank for the last 10 years of economic boom dont you?
Good reason, If you don't trust someone don't vote for them, I'm sure many more vote the same way. I thought that was the big world econemy boom, Roll in money GST, And the mining boom we have to thank.
I reckon it's pretty fair to say that the Liberal government, and particularly Costello, played a very significant part in Australia's prosperity over the past decade. One thing that has occurred to me was that whilst the Libs were in power and Costello was controlling the budgets, the banks toed the line and interest rates only altered when the Reserve Bank changed them. Funny thing though, the minute Labour gets into power, the banks go hell for leather independently of the Reserve Bank and start jacking rates whenever it suits them. I can't help thinking that this indicates that banks have no respect for Labour as economic managers but weren't prepared to try the same thing under Costello.
No doubt when it comes to numbers Costello was one of the best. And Howard was one of the worst, So that might say Costello was a good treasure but could make a hopeless PM?, As far as our budget goes today it's fine, World econemy is tight, And we have slowed down no doubt, But we are not in trouble as some might lead everyone to believe, There are very scared people out there, And i wont blame them for being scared, Times are very tough right now, It's very hard going, The U.S is having a coughing fit right now and everyone is nerves, But Rates should stay firm this year and drop next year which will be very much welcomed. But with the banks raising rates independent of the Reverse bank they have a claim to that, According to them they need to based on cost and world economy crisis, Like they don't earn enough from us as it is?, Call it that, As they say, Or BS, But yes i see it as taking advantage of a new government.
