Car broke down today, couldn't get any gears in the transmission, it's like it wont get out of nutreul, did a code check and got code 73 pressure control solenoid current . does anyone know where it is or what it looks like and how to fix it? I'm Good with this stuff but don't have the money for the transmission shop, so any info would be great.
Unless the selector arm actually dropped off the transmission stopping you from selecting "D" then I'd say you are up for a new transmission unfortunately. Another maybe is that the electrical connector to the trans has fallen off. Both long shots. Good Luck.
could just be that one solenoid though, which means you are either up for. A. The tranny shop to properly Diagnose and repair B. Up to your elbows in grease and transmission parts C. Up for a new tranny D. Ask about a stage 2 shift kit which might rectify this also A stage 2 shift kit should replace that solenoid anyway, someone on here will know for sure, but you should also check your fluid level and the color of the fluid, it should be a nice reddish color. Before the trans did this, when you selected Drive from Reverse or Neutral how long did the gear take to engage? should be around 1 second for a nice tight and clean trans. One final thing I read here once that worked is if the fluid is at the correct level it might even just be a stuck solenoid, place the car in neutral (not that it makes a huge difference atm) and give it a good rev to say 3k - 3.5k for a minute or so remove your foot from the pedal and slide the car down into drive as it reaches about 1k (just above Idle) Might wanna hold your foot on the brake incase it actually works.
Looked on GOOGLE and found: Pressure Control Solenoid - Automotive Forums .com Car Chat which mentions the solenoid. Also looked at a few other sites re the pressure control solenoid but couldn't find one which mentioned complete lack of gears. Good Luck.
the t/bar underneath the car is a rod which is adjustable via a lock bolt, the bolt came loose on mine, couldent select gear's from park. the t/bar moved but the selector on the box doesen't.
i only just did a service in the tranny last week as the fluid in it was brown, all i did was put a new filter in and refilled with new fluid, one of the easiest jobs you could do. after i did that the transmission was perfect, ive never had it drive so nice, the thing was perfect, then out of the blue there was no gears and i got a code 73. im sorta guessing cos the transmission was well past its service, putting in the new fluid is a bit thicker than the old fluid (old fluid was almost like water it was that thin) that the tranny had to work harder than its used too and thats what caused the problem. there is nothing wrong with the selecter arm or anything like that and the engine runs perfect, but its like i just cant get out of nuetral. thanks for replies
sound like the crud (burt clutches) in the oil. has infected the soliniods. sorry but look like a full rebuild or a wreaker's second hander.
I paid $1800 for mine installed at Southport but in the big smoke they should be slightly cheaper. You'll save cash if you can pull the trans out and go for exchange. Good Luck.
i dont have the money for a rebuild then so i will just get them to fix the solenoid and put my corvette servo in
well i got the car back today from the tranny shop and it ended up being the pump had **** itself and thats why i got code 73 cos no fluid was getting to the solenoid. i told him yesterday to just fix the problem and this morning i got a call back from him saying its all finished, ended up costing me $1350 cos the pric just went and put a new box in instead of fixing the problem, worse possible time as it is just before christmas and he coulda fixed it for a few hundred $ but instead he just went and did that so we had to dig into our house deposit money. just gave me yet another reason for exactly why i refuse to use mechanics.
they should not have done the work without first consulting you, if you requested they repair THAT box they should have, not doing so and then charging you for the other work technically is against the far trade laws and probably falls slightly under entrapement. E.G "although we did additional work you did not request you may not ahve your car untill full payment is made" I would be lodging a complaint if this is the case.
My feelings for what they are worth is that for $1350 you got a good deal. Remember you said "just fix the problem" - I'd guess that he found the pump had failed and then had dumped metal shards etc into the valve body etc etc and came to the conclusion that with a reco box you get new everything as against a "repaired" box (which is repaired to the condition it was before it failed)...the reco box must win. A mechanics lot ain't a good one! - consider the mech - your cars on the hoist and he's opened your box and discovered "...." tries to ring you for OK to go ahead but you don't answer.....another job is waiting to go on the hoist and he must get an answer....what does he do???? Look on the bright side - now you have a GOOD transmission.
1- he did ring me the day before and said its either the pump or torque converter and said he would call me back when he knows for sure, and yes i told him to fix that problem which ever it was. 2- there was only one other car in the shop so he was not busy 3- it is good having a whole new box cos i know it SHOULD last and i got warranty with it, and the reason i got it for $1350 is cos i paid cash, but the thing im more ****ty with is he put a new one in without asking me, making me have to fork out that kinda money just before christmas just so he can have a better christmas, what about me? i'd like to have a good christmas too.
last thing you want is for your "fixed" gearbox to sh1t itself on xmas day driving to your parents place. I say good on them for doing the job properly! its a darn sight cheaper than any other quotes i had to have mine fixed , and you got a guarantee! On the flipside , you may have had a 30 day guarantee on the "quick fix" but if what you said about the "brown oil" is right , your gearbox was almost about to permanently die on you , like band wear , solenoids caked up , overheat.. etc.. so you my friend.. are lucky your mechanic looked after you! Its guys like him that give mechanics a good name! ( be thankful you even have money to repair your car.. im flat out affording to put fuel in mine any given day of the week!!! self employed FTL )
