Hi guy's, Just new to the site, hope someone can help me out. I moved my sons 95 VS Exec into the driveway to put some air in the tyres. When I went to move it back I lost all steering, the steering wheel was just spinning freely both ways without the wheels moving. Had a look under the bonnet to find no fluid in the resevoir. After filling it, I can now turn right but not left. I read an old post where it said about bleeding the system. Would this be what it needs, if so, how do I go about this? Do I need to do something else? All help appreciated. Steve.
The power steering system being out of fluid will not be the cause of this. It should just make it heaps harder to turn as theres still a physical connection between the steering wheel and the front wheels on the car, the power side of it just assists it. It sounds like either the intermediate steering arm has come uncoupled,or the steering rack itself is completely stuffed. If the car has an airbag in the steering wheel,be careful not to turn the steering wheel more than 1 1/2 turns either way if its just freely turning, or the clock spring used in the airbag/steering column will be damaged.
Hi Brett, thanks for your reply. I'll have an in depth look at it tomorrow. Going by what you've said, things aren't looking too good for the clock spring. How will I know if it's been damaged?
The SRS airbag light will come on on the dash. And I think the horn also uses it too for its connectors.
Sounds like you have sheared the collapsable coupling in the steering column. DO NOT DRIVE THIS CAR. The steering column needs to be replaced. Has it been driven with no power steering fluid in the system?
Hi, had a better look when my son came home yesterday. It does look like the coupling is the problem. It could've been driven with no fluid but not sure as my son only just brought it home then went away with work. There's no problem with driving this anywhere, we got it back where it was and it will stay there. How much works involved in changing over the column? Thanks for your replies.
