    Hey guys,

Long story short, my car was off the road for about 12 months. When i brought it back to life everything seemed to be running nicely. However, a little while ago my car started running badly (dropped to 5 cyl). Took it to holden and they took a fuel sample, it looked like the murray river.

I was told i needed a new fuel tank (as they suspected it rusted), new pump, new injectors and fuel line. Was quoted $1800+, so i told them nicely to **** off. :p.

Anyway i changed the tank, pump, fuel rail and injectors myself for $250 (Second hand parts). The old tank didnt looked rusted at all, so it may have been bad fuel??

Anyway since putting it all back together whenever the tank drops below 50% the pump starts making a lot of noise, and when it gets to 1/3rd of a tank and i turn right the car almost stalls.

Its a VR Wagon so the tank is located under the spare wheel. Is it possible ive installed the pump incorrectly? I mean it seems to only fit one way, but the noise is a VERY loud hum, which gets worse as the tank empties.

The other idea is it might be "rust" (At this point ill say the fuel sample looked more like dirt than rust, and there was no rust signs in the old tank) in the fuel lines... causing a blockage??

Could it also be the fuel pressure switch? I doubt its the pump itself, as it was brand new....

    Cheers, Errol.

Might need a new pump, best way to test is to flush all fuel lines (compressed air).

Start with the tank and work forwards:

    Pickup,
    Pump,
    Filters,
    Lines,
    Inj.

    aZk.

I'm not sure with the wagons, but in the sedan, the pickup sits in a swirl pot, When installing the pump, it takes a bit if fiddling to get it to sit right. If the pick up isn't sitting exactly where it should be, it will have similar symptoms to yours. As I said, this is for a sedan, the wagon may be different.

I think NAAF is going in the right direction - utes and wagons can have probs when the fuel return line is damaged and/or not properly replaced when a new fuel pump is fitted. First problem is stalling when cornering with less than 1/4 tank.
