The belts on my 5.0 ute have begun making quite a bit of noise. Its not the slipping type noise but a consistant squeaky type of noise at idle. I have replaced the water pump belt recently but the air cond and alternator belt are a few years old. I dont really want to change them as they look in good condition. I have heard that you can hold a bar of soap against the belt while it is running and it will fix the noise. Has anyone tried this? How long does it last?
Are there any other cures?

yes you can hold soap on the belt while its turning i did this in my old VB and it stopped the sqeaking noise.

as for how long it lasts got no idea as i blew the diff two days later and the car never ran again while i owned it.

I need to do it about once a month to my VS 5L. Usually it's only the power steering belt, and new ones made no difference.
