have u checked header bolts..? if slightly loose and exhaust is escaping it will make a strange noise until it warms up and expands and seals itself, otherwise it dosnt sound like a tick or slap to me sounds more rotational like pulley/belts ect

Water pump pulley has some play but i doubt it's that.
I will check header bolts...

water pump pulley can make noises if loose the shaft starts to vibrate within itself and can go away when it warms up it will slowly get worse, when cold take belt off and spin by hand see what it feels like it really shouldnt have any play

Header bolts fine.
Water pump pulley fine..
Removed MSE.

Still the same....
The car is due for its first service in 3 weeks...
VERY CURIOUS what Holden will say about it...
I will ask to speak to mechanic rather than some random at the service desk...

Header flange? Problem is you keep chasing your tail. Yes, it will be interesting to hear.
Am I correct in assuming there's no noise unless under load?

Correct. Nice and quiet on idle. As soon as i take off it starts knocking. Even when i take it very easy to keep revs under 1k it's still knocking. Once it shifts into 4th i reckon and just cruising at 50 or 60kmh there is no noise...
Bizzare...

What if you accelerate moderately? Or downshift at say 60 or 80 k's? Does the noise come back?

I'm starting to wonder if it's even coming from the motor?

Have you tried putting it in neutral at the speed / revs where the noise is at it's most noticeable? Is it still there in neutral?

Did not try that...
Will test tomorrow to rule out potential gearbox related issue..
