    build number for what sort of car - just a run of the mill VX?

    If a Genuine HSV Clubsport you can go to HSV website and enter the VIN and get a little info from that.

    generally not, unless HSV. I have heard that from the early 1980s rego/build statistics shennanigans were taking place at GM-H to keep commodore sales ahead of falcon. Records were destroyed, and the practice continues to this day. You can't even gain access to your car's build history etc via holden (would be commercial in confidence, i guess). Conversely, with ford, you can give customer relations your data and they are able to give you a letter of authenticity....
