Hi guys, I (like many others I suspect) have purchased one of those cheap cables form EBay and can't get it to work. It turns out I got confused after reading all the posts about this issue and came to the conclusion I simply needed to buy a OBDII Usb cable, download EfiLive V4, install on my laptop and go crazy checking and clearing engine codes..

The cable I bought came from here:-

V1.5 ELM327 OBD-II OBD2 USB Cable Software Car Diagnostic Interface Scanner Tool
eBay Australia: Buy new & used fashion, electronics & home d

I can get the cable talking to EfiLive but not to the car. I get the error message:- Com timeout: Expecting frame header byte

Smart people round here would be laughing right now, I know...

But a serious question if I may:- can I do anything to alter the cable I have to make it work on my 2000 VT Series II V6 Acclaim?

Cheers

Why won’t a generic OBDII Scanner work on a VT Commodore? as it looks like it has the OBDII connector.

Because the ADR rules did not require an active OBDII system in Australia before 2006, MOST VEHICLE MANUFACTURERS did not activate it.

The ELM327 will not talk to your pre 2006 Commodore. Good news is the ELM327 works a treat on just about all of the 2006 and later full OBDII cars tested it on including a 2008 Hilux 2.7L using OBD2 crazy software.

You must remember -THERE WAS NO ACROSS THE BOARD STANDARD IN AUSTRALIA BEFORE 2006. Ford Falcons AU – BA & Holden Commodores VT – VX – VY were getting closer, the OBDII connector was there, and as each year went by, a little more of the OBDII system was revealed. The BA & VY allowed LIVE ENGINE DATA to be viewed, but NO Fault Code recognition. Ford Falcon BF & Holden Commodore VZ have full OBDII compliance.
