:bang: Ok, thinking I am not loving my VS enough and I have no clue what to do with the following... 1. Temp gauge going to red pretty much any time the car is now started, give or take a little warm up 2. Coolant level appears fine then mysteriously disappears. No obvious signs of leaks nor is it getting in with the oil. 3. Fan does not appear to kick in at any time. 4. Transmission fluid appears little dirty on dipstick and is getting low, appears to be heating up if possible? Car is not being driven at the moment, pending some clue to as what is going on. I do regularly check levels and this matter has become noticeable in last month or so. Just wondering if someone can shed light before I seek help from the local mechanic as they tend not to tell me things and I want to educate myself, just in case someone is taking advantage of me and the old girl. Thanks. mish
Hi Mish, welcome to justcommodores As always, start with a home service, particularly a coolant flush. This guide from the how-to section will run through the details: http://forums.justcommodores.com.au/showthread.php?t=28762 Make sure you do the radiator cap and the thermostat, as the how-to says, they are important and will probably be that parts that solve your problem. Check for error codes as detailed here: http://forums.justcommodores.com.au/showthread.php?t=22307 I think the VS has a fault for the fan, if that is the problem. Otherwise, you might come up with another fault pointing you in the direction, if the service on the coolant system doesnt fix it. Does the fan come on when you turn the air con on? Maybe do a service on the transmission too.
Replace your thermostat, sounds like it could be stuck shut. As kopper69 says, do a full coolant flush, and make sure you use the 50% concentrate 50% water mix, not that premixed crap you can buy from the shops, its just not strong enough. Check all your hoses and make sure they are connected properly and have not perished. RE the cooling fan, try running the A/C, does it come on then? If so, then your coolant temperature sensor for the ECU is probably shot. If the fan doesn't come on with the A/C, its most likely a blown fuse 40A, or a buggered relay, which can be found under the hood as LO FAN and HI FAN relays from memory. Re the transmission fluid, if its dirty I would be taking it to an auto shop, and get them to fully flush the transmission, that way the converter, cooling lines and the trans itself all has fresh fluid in it, and they will also change the strainer inside it. When you check the level, make sure the car has been driven for atleast 20km, and is in park with the engine idling, then take your reading.
