I did and oil change on my VX SS S2 and i looked at the service sticker and it said they had use sytheticlly fortified oil. So i went out and got Valvoline XLD 15W-40 filled her up and when i started it the tappets were really noisy i just assumed some air in the system and it will work out. However after a 10Km drive nothing still noisy. I read the manual and it said to use a 10-30 but if unavaliable use a 15 or 20. So i went in to my mates place who had Mobil 10W-30 Sythetic oil. I drained out the valvo and put that it and now it's perfect no noise. However it seems to be drinking it some how. It took 500ml and i've only gone 100Km. The car has 83000 on it and well looked after and serviced. Does anyone know what oil Holden use in their services of the LS1? Cheers

Your car doesn't have tappets, it has lifter which are hydraulic.

I would be using something like Castro Edge at least. It is a decent affoedable oil and far better the XLD.

LOL!!!, Castrol Edge.... that stuff that looks like a caramel shake after hard work!?! It has a wicked advertising campaign behind it, it must be good! Dont for one second think Mr Bray is really using Castrol Edge guys, Fuchs is whare its at, bang for buck there is nothing better. MC-GTO 10W40, supersyn 5w40.

Myself, I use Motul which is a big step up from Edge which is a big step up from XLD! Just giving advice from my experiences.

Get my drift? I don't buy an oil based on adverts but based on asking around about peoples' opinions like on this forum and from mates. Yeah I used Fuches which was great but found out my local blender was mixing some crap in to stetch their margin. Forget that!

An 83K engine going through 1/2 liter of oil in 100Km's.....something doesn't sound correct here!!! Surely the plugs would be pretty oily and have a blue smoke haze out the rear???
My completly stuffed FJ didn't use that much oil when I was a youngster, before I took it to the dump. LOL.

i use a 25W oil in my VP, 20 at the lowest... 15 is to thin for an engine as old as a VP...

I did once use 25w Castrol Edge oil, Ell crapo it was i hated it so bad.

I have used many 20's but this 15w has been super for the car, Now used the same oil for 2 changes, But i wouldn't go past that down to 10.
With the 15-40 i would have to say it's been quieter to drive and has a little better pick up and doesn't use a single drop in between changes.

i only bring it up because its the reccomended weight from factory(20W50 SAE) so i figured it only made sense to use a slightly thicker oil at this age but if your happy then no dramas.

I was nerves as hell using it i have never pushed it past 20W-50.. I spent the first 3 weeks watching listing checking for any issues.. Past that i felt much happier.
Also get a touch better fuel econemy, But it does take longer to warm.

Id say you didnt fill it right the first time.

You'd never drink that much oil on a car that young, hell my 2stroke bike doesnt.

Noisey lifters indicate lack of oilage.. youd be blowing smoke from here to america if it was leaking that bad.

^^ he didnt happen to have some for sale did he?

Fuchs titan MC-GTO 10w30 is what comes in your ls1 from factory. the genuine holden engine oil you can buy has fuchs labels on the back and it comes in a fuchs box.
