Isn't it a bit "extreme" to use 10w"60" engine oil in the new engine? Viscosity of "60" may put extra stress on the engine parts hence higher fuel consumption? But then LS3 is a very robust engine...I use 5w30 in my 6 years old CX9 instead of the recommended 5w20 as it is an older engine. It seems to run smoother afterwards and also save me to keep different grades of engine oil as I use 5w30 to top up my wife's Audi S1 (heavy oil drinker in between services) and my daughter's Honda Jazz (hardly needs any top up). :D

can depend we you live in Australia (I always ran 10w60 in my l98's and ran great had a l77 and had to run 5w30 due to lifter tick), if up north temp can be 20+ more than down south in winter, running 5w40 edge in my stock tuned Ls3 dumped factory oil at 1000k next change at 7500k then 7500 next changes.(will never see a holden dealer service don't trust them).

Yes our engine in a racing series and all modified engines making over 20% (300rwkw not the fricken boot sticker) should run 50 weight, 60 not out of the question but generally not ideal with the factory tolerance.
Startup flow on a daily / streeter is the concern, I've been 0, 5, 10 and 15 but with hydraulics of AFM and VVT, and ITE keeping EOT in the 80°s, best to stick to 5w40 in my case.
As above 10w may be ideal in most conditions particularly if the usual 5w clatter scares you, but for a daily with cold starts below 10° ambient I wouldn't go there without pre-flow from an external pump or accumulator.

always run 10w60 edge in my L98 VE's put some in a L77 and ticky ticky tick

Used to run 10w60 in my cammed l98 morel tiebar lifter upgrade and have to run 5w40 so running that in my VE v6 daily(180K) VE ss ute cammed and VF2 SS exhaust tuned etc, buy in 10l or 20l drums so the garage shelf isn't full of differnet oils, bloody diesel prado runis it though.

5-40 is good stuff as it covers all the modern stuff that usually states 5-30, 10-30 in the books with extra protection for the Aussie summer temps where the 20 and 30 weight stuff gets really touch n go.

Where abouts is that promoted, in-store? Wondering if the Racing is also on special is all.
Saw the ads from email promotion. They only sell 4 different kind of engine oil, please see the attachment.

Hi guys.....

Interesting thing happened this morning, car was in for its Oil change between service which i always do, but first service since getting the W407 upgrade 6k ago. Now ive heard alot of talk about when you upgrade camshaft you should change oil specs.

So when i was the service advissor said we need to change the oil spec now you have done the cam.( before i even mentioned it which impressed me)
He said that they are putting in Penrite HPR 30 20w 60 in it, i thought that was a bit high but he said its cos of its Zinc levels. Im very impressed with Rockingham Holden since having the car 14 months now, they have done all the servicing and wouldnt let anyone else work on it.

Anyway since where all talking about Oil Specs thought id post my experience for you guys just to let you know what Holden are doing regarding Cammed LS3 under warranty, also oil spec apparently is GM approved..

on my LSA i changed it at 3000km (bed in period) then at 10000km and will do it when it reaches 15000 or 6 months, i think every 6 months or 7500km is about right especially for city driving, don't forget that the long oil change intervals are designed to make the running cost of the car more appealing to consumers NOT for the protection of your engine.

I did some caluclations to see how much will the service cost while the car is under warranty (i do servicing myself once out of warranty). I have 5 yr factory warranty and do under 15000km in 12 months. I did these number based on first 60 000km by when the car will be out of warranty anyway..

10000km service interval will cost me $1500

7500km service interval will cost me $2000

If I do service myself at 5000km interval and take it to mechanic every 10000km it will cost $2220

For 200 bucks extra over 5 years i will go with option 3 :)
