Hey guys/gals, i was just wondering peoples opinions and what oil they currently run in pretty much VX - VY !

Currently own a very tight low k VX L67 that's ran full synthetic all it's life, 10w40, never burns it but i was considering running a 5w40 all round, viscosity & oils have changed alot since half of these cars were made. Sitting on 105k at the moment. Every engine is different obviously but hey, it's simply a convo based discussion, try be civil :)

I'd never run 20w50 personally regardless of km's anyway. So yeah, what's everyone running ?

Brand (inc type e.g Penrite HPR 5w40, Penrite Enviro+ 5w40, Nulon Hi-Tech 10w40, Mobil 1, etc

This is true, suppose more options to other oils i guess, i know some 3.8's burn it depending on how they are mechanically but hey. I was contemplating, it's used to a w40 oil, i'm not changing that aspect just the 10 or 5 aspect if i can be bothered. Hence why i asked others opinions on what they run anything VX & newer.

I would not run a 5W40 in an Ecotec.
So I think finding the best 10W40 should be your mission. I would start with Valvoline Synpower 10W40. I run the 5W40 Synpower in my Alloytec and it is great stuff.

As above, don't go to anything thinner. I run a 15w-40 Penrite oil in our 245K L67 and it purrs like a kitten.

Unfortunately it's hard these days because it's basically 20 years since those "recommenced" oil specs were (10w30, 15w40 & 20w50), since then oil tech has changed hugely
I don't think i'll be changing the oil from what it's currently running. Keep it at 10w40 & call it a day.

Just don't run 5w40 in a 3800 period, for me personally having worked for both Mercedes-Benz & BMW i'd have to go with Shell Helix Ultra (the newest oil in their family that's super pure because it's made by natural gas) - Also BMW's new oil supplier, personally i think the ultra is underrated, that or Penrite 10 Tenths PAO & ESTER full synthetic 10w40

But that's what i'd run personally, one of them two.

Dumb question immortality, correct me if i'm wrong but the later VY's L36 & L67 both got a larger sump if i'm not mistaken (6.2 - 6.4L roughly) i find VX's are full with about 5.2L roughly

10w is best unless you live in a very cold climate, w = weather, lower the number better for colder starts performance in cold climates. Full synthetic oil doesn't break down as fast as normal oil and can withstand higher temperatures, I use 15w 40 in summer and 10w 40 in winter semi synthetic, so I plan it for 6month changers.

Technology has changed with regard to what is in the oil (or isn't in many cases) but viscosity ratings haven't. A 40 weight oil is still a 40 weight oil.
