I just hooked up a Auto-meter eletronic oil pressure gauge. I read the manual and pressure at warm @1850rpm is supposed to be 39.85psi however my gauge shows it at 23psi @1850rpm however at warm idle it's at 39.85-40psi, but again as soon as there is any throttle it's back down to 23psi. Dosn't seem right anyone got any ideas? Is it possiable to hook these senders up backwards? Cheers
hooked it up as the manual said. Sender wire to green on gauge. Orange to acc, Red to Pos + batt, Blk to ground. And on sender Ground to ground
a bad earth somewhere maybe? have you checked the oil pump pressure bypass spring? i've fitted an autometer oil pressure gauge on the V6 and it never drops bellow 40psi hot or cold and it comes up to 50psi when the revs rise etc
I don't know if the info I mentioned in http://forums.justcommodores.com.au...97/63812-vr-acclaim-wiring-loom-question.html is any help to you as the steps are from the service manual which are on ebay for $8. The above advice sounds about right for most motors, should be 40psi and rise as the motor revs. I'm yet to do this, so let us know how you go.
Cheers. The only thing i can think is that the hole in the sender is very small and that when i rise the revs the oil passing the hole greats a vacum. But it dosn't answer why i reads 23psi on cold idle yet reads 40psi on warm idle.
The oil will be thinner when it's running warm so you could be onto something with the hole being too small, or the wrong viscosity of oil perhaps. That's assuming the wiring is right of course, it only leaves the sender unit. What sort of sender unit did you use and I'd probably double check it's the right type. Does the gauge come with the sender unit and are there any steps listed for testing the gauge to see if it's working right (e.g. earthing it out)? If it came with the sender unit, is it the same sort listed here: http://forums.justcommodores.com.au.../59661-vn-how-install-oil-pressure-gauge.html Never earth out your car gauges unless it says in the manual as it can damage the sensors and / or the gauges permanantly to give inaccurate readings. There's other steps listed in the Holden Service Manual for testing the instrument lights (factory oil pressure light) and senders properly if you need to go that far with it.
