I have both a VRII comm. & a VSII Statesman with the ecotec engine.
So many oils on the market now. I thought as a general rule that older cars say pre 1990 needed 20/50 grades whereas newer cars needed something closer to 15/40- but the VS manual says to use a 20/50 oil.
Any thoughts? not looking for an expensive high performance oil just an everyday good qlty one say GTX2 (20/50) or GTX 3 (15/40).
which is the best grade for the VR & VS models?

The V6 Commodore motor dates way way back before 1990 and is pretty low tech. I never pay more than $14 for 5 litres of any brand - whatever is on special. Always 20/50 grade. Never had a problem.

high performance engines need good oil. but if its stocker then just some every day oil will do easily. but this is a choice you have to make and feel good with

I use Mobil HP 20w50 in my VS V6, have done for the past 70,000kms, never had an issue with it. As previously mentioned by others, the manual recommends 20w50, so thats what it gets. I have tried a lighter grade, 10w40 oil, but you can hear the engine ticking away when it is hot, whereas with the 20w50 its quiet as....

Thanks for feedback. So a good brand 20/50 grade would be good for both the VR engine & the VS ecotec?

Yep, thats what I would be using. It's designed to use that grade oil from new, so with a bit of mileage on it by now it would be even more suited to it.

For the VR and VS i would recommend you use Castrol GTX2 (20/50).

I switched from magnatec to GTX2 and found much better fuel usage. All these people using expensive oils, which are too thin for the commodore. The VR was designed for 20/50, so why would you use a different oil? Especially when the no. of kms is getting up there.
