Oh god...this is ****ing scary for a newb like me.

Last night while I was drivin home, i heard some strange ass sound comming from the engine so i pulled up, popped the bonnet and had a look...nothing had stopped moving, nothing was jammed, so i drove her home.

This morning when i started it up to have a look (and do the oil etc) the ****ing belt snapped right off and something went real wrong on me.

Right, so i've got a 96 vs and on the front there is 8 cogs lookin like this.

The one i've highlighted in red is ROYALLY ****ed. I have no idea what it is, what it was or what it used to be but its ****ed, i can tell you that much.

The cog or what ever it used to sit on is fine, the grove is still in the steel and there is no damage on it (the metal thing going back into the engine) but what ever used to sit on it is rooted....

    So;
    1. what the hell was that thing?
    2. Where can I get em from?
    3. what do i look for in terms of more serious problems?
    4. How do i know what belt is the right one when i get a new one?
    5. Where do i get a new belt :p?

the one you highlighted is a tensioner pulley. Not that expensive and pretty easy to remove.

ok, so how do i get the belt back on?

I went up to repco and got a new pulley. (the guy laughed at me and wants to know where the rest of the pulley is...because i've only got the casing of the bearing left)

follow the diagram i sent you and from the numbers it goes like this

on top of number one with wavy side down, outside of number two, outside of number three, on top of number four, around the bottom of number five, on the right of number six, on the top of number seven, and around the bottom of number 8

let me know how you go.

ok, so i've got the belt on but it doesn't seem right, its almost like there is two inches of slack that I can pinch on the belt... its a lot better though- thanks for ya help.

which of these wheel things do i adjust to tighten the belt up properly and how do i go about doing that?
