I have had this problem for quite some time now and just cannot trust the car.

I have replaced, radiator, overflow tank, thermostat, radiator cap, water pump, heater tap, bypassed the heater, had the heads checked using that thing he places on top of the radiator, hoses, cap has been replaced.

I have no idea where else to look, put it in for a pressure test and they stated it could not be done.

When it gets hot the gauge goes right up and then drops. this says to me that only half the system is full of water, but where does it go

when I take the cap of it spits out heaps which also tells me the pressure is good.

I am ready to burn it.

Bullcrap a cooling system pressure test can't be done.

Have you tried bleeding the system numerous times?

What about temperature with an infared gun?

V6 or V8?

V6, I have cooked it several times, bullet proof engine these V6s

They said something about the radiator has the wrong fitting at the top, bought it new of Ebay.

I seem to have a bit of rust bubbles when I remove the cap.

I also just filled it then, the header tank was empty.

Are there some welsh plugs that may be leaking, I cannot see any water coming out and no real puddles.

Obviously the workshop you took it to doesn't have compatible test fittings.
My aftermarket alloy radiator takes a Toyota Hilux size cap. Are you sure have the correct cap fitted? Should be a 135kPa radiator cap.

Stop spending money on it until you have it pressure tested.

Coolant either leaks externally or internally. Do you have white smoke or steam out the exhaust? What about coolant and engine oil condition? Did you get a combustion gas leakage test done? Is that what you meant by the thingy on top of the radiator?

You've replaced most of the cooling system bar the heater core and inlet manifold gaskets by what you said.

I'd correctly fill the system first, then bleed it of air and actually get a pressure test done.

Pressure test the cooling system as mentioned above, call a few different radiator places and you will find someone that will have a pressure tester that will fit.. If its a V6 , the inlet manifold gaskets are likely to be the cause of the problems if the coolant is disappearing and theres no physical leaks. Sometimes it can be hard to detect that the inlet manifold gaskets are the problem as you dont always get a lot of white smoke (steam) out the exhaust.

would a pressure test show any faults with the inlet manifold gasket?

I do have a VRS kit which should include the inlet manifold gasket.

is it overheating or is the gauge faulty?
bleed it properly
apart from when you work on it is it using water and how much
do you have coolant in it or just water
coolant makes it alot easier to detect leaks
