last few weeks the vr has been overheating sometimes i think its a fan prob as there are no leaks .she runs nice and cool when driving but when stoped at lights she just keeps climing .last time she was overheating i lifted the bonnet and the thermo fan wasnt on so i turned the aircon on and the thermo came on for like 2 min then stoped for like 2min then started up again for 2min and so on .is this normal for the fan to go and stop all the time or should it be on all the time when the aircon is on ? plzz any and all info would be great
well to test the fan you get to lugs on 2 lengths of wire and you connect them to the fan and you put the wires to the battery and if it goes the fan is good so then you would test your relay
it has a new relay as that was the first thing i tried and the thermo fan does work when aircon is on just for 1-2 min then stops for 1-2 min and so on .just wanted to know if thats normal for it to start and stop all the time or stay on?
It is normal for the aircon fan to turn on/off - it only turns on when the compressor is working and once the car cools down the compressor switches off and also the fan.
ok so if the thermo fan works with the aircon on and not works with no aircon then sencor no good?is that right?
Not quite - when you turn the aircon on, the blower fan blows, the compressor engages and the aircon cooling fan turns on. After some time the interior of the car cools down to a point where the aircon turns the compressor off which then turns the aircon cooling fan off....the blower inside will still be blowing but it will just be blowing ambient air ....not cooled by the aircon because the air is already cool. On the VR you have 2 fans - one for cooling the radiator and a second one which turns on when the aircon compressor is engaged. The first one which cools the radiator is turned on/off by the coolant temperature sensor which senses the coolant temperature and when it gets hot it tells the ECU to switch the fan on. If the fan is not switching on, it may also be due to the coolant not being hot enough. Commodores run hot and it is not unusual for the temp gauge to reach 3/4 before the cooling fan switches on...then it will rapidly cool and then switch off, repeating this cycle till the car starts moving and gets airflow thru the grille. Pls note that I am not 100% sure that the VR has 2 fans but I think it does...also please remember that an engine is really not overheating till it boils or the gauge reaches H. Rising above what is considered normal is just a sign that the temp is above normal ....not necessarily overheating. I hope I haven't confused you........Good luck.
It is surprising how hot the engine will get before the fan kicks in intermittently. You would not be the first person to think that the coolant was running hotter than it should before forcing the fan to kick in. And yes, when the A/C is on the fan kicks in and out over and over.
I posted something early I am a yummy mummy that love cars. After my piss head mechanic who is also my brothers best mate put a new water pump in he failed to change the thermo. Is the the norm. Ever since that new pump when in my over flow drys up really quick and the temp goes high. Someone else said do a backwards flush so i will try that i got all he asked just not sure wheather to have the car running or not. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. I my be a girl but love getting greasy as well as being femine. I love the beach cars racing my bros 450KTM with my son who 10 in qld against his 70cc >Honda go the little dude, weekends away drags yeah my bros mates had alot to do with this. Help please it would be appreciated thankx all dolly
if the car starts overheating the high fan speed should come on on a set temperature. 110 degrees. try disconnecting the coolant temp sensor mate
You need to bleed the air out of the system. On the VR V6 there is a small screw on the neck where the top radiator hose goes to the engine. I usually fill my radiator and overflow bottle and then go for a 5 or 10 minute drive. Then keep the car running, open the bonnet and slowly undo the screw and let the trapped air out until there is a steady stream of coolant coming out. And then I top up the overflow bottle again.
If you want to get all the air out of your coolant system then. 1. You take the overflow cap of and stick the tube inside the end of your garden hose. 2. Turn the hose on slowly and then crack off the bleeder valve on the thermo stat housing. 3. When a full stream of fluid comes out do up the valve and you are all ready to roll. after you replace thwe cap. this can also be done with a large coke bottle. 1. You fill the coke bottle right to the top. 2. Fill the radiator as much as you can with a hose or bucket. 3. Open the bleed valve on the thermostat housing. 4. Shove the top of the coke bottle into the radiator cap hole. or 5. While pressing the bottle down squeeze till coolant comes out of the bleed valve. 6. Quickly do up the valve and replace the radiator cap. After a little run when the system gets pressure in it open the valve to let the last little bit of air out. There are other ways but this is how i tend to do it.
the blled nipple is higher then the rad cap so will not flow out of there without assistance. Thermo stats have a small bbypass hole in them to let a little fluid past all the time, so air gets past. Always good idea to bleed again after a run, i do. normally get a little air out but not much. Hose on the over flow spout is easiest and cleanest way to do it. You don't get covered in chrap just before you go out.
