And I thought 18 years old with 120 hours was stupid..

I'm not bright on the P laws, isn't it a power:weight ratio somewhere? Just throw a bunch of heavy s*** in your boot and say it's permanent :rofl2:

I got my L's at 15 and 9 months, and my P's on my 16th birthday. Full licence on 17th birthday. There were no restrictions on P's except you couldnt exceed 100kmh. Any car was ok, no worries.

My daughter just turned 16, she has 200 hrs and a year on L's before she gets P's, and she will be 19 before she gets a full licence and is allowed to drive some of our cars at all..

    Damn I feel old lmao

i think everyone really hates young people and of course no one hates the young more than police, politicians etc. however you have to feel for young folks who get shafted by the 200hr logs, 10km/h over the limit = 3 months suspension, zero BAC... its tough being young these days

i feel for my kids and yours who will have to put up with more crap in 10-15-20 yrs time... and the carbon tax and $2.50 petrol and all the good stuff about to come

i'm happy that petrol is 'only' $1.50 a litre and we can still enjoy V8s and as long as you speed appropriately, you can get away with it

You're in the NT I see. So was I, mine came a year early because I did it through school.. are they still doing that, does a similar system still exist?

One of the awesome things we also used to have when I grew up in Darwin is no point system. If you got picked up for speeding, you paid the fine before it came to court and it never happened. It only even showed up on your record if you were too slow to pay and it went to court.

And of course no open road speed limit, which in most places I understand is now gone.. though there are still some roads in NT which have no limit if I am correct? I bet that was politically unpopular, no NT govt would have been game to change that until the Feds interfered. I note that the road toll hasnt changed much since they started with the speed restrictions...

I can still remember passing a cop at 200kmh on a long straight stretch just north of Tennant Creek and having him wave and smile at me :) He was only doing about 180 lol... they could still charge you if they thought you were out of control or your car wasnt suitable, but the charge was dangerous driving and they had to prove it..

I kind of agree with the current restrictions, I was lucky (or unlucky?) enough to not have them, but they make sense. I personally think waiting 3 years from the day you get a learners to the day you get a full license may be a little much... it would be good if they could advance earlier by doing courses, behaving well etc... the carrot or stick approach always works well.

any LEARNER AND P PLATER will know that he cannot drive anyway forced induction car
hell cant even drive a 13b NON turbo rotor in QLD ..

maybe you should read your learners manual before posting up pointless threads

    thats my 2 cents ...

I did mine though the school course aswell that was about 10 years ago now. don't know if they still do it. but as far as open speed limits go there are none now they have been replaced by 130km/h limits.
But i did hear that one of the people running for govt here wants to re-introduce open limits as the road toll has gone up since the ban. (hope he gets in :)) We now have a points system :(.

None at all? Thats a shame... I doubt it will get reversed though, the Feds hold the NT to ransom with road funding to make them toe the line.. proves the point though, reducing open road limits does NOT reduce road tolls.

My licence was more than 30 years ago, glad to see they kept a good thing happening with the schools system.

As regards the points system, that was probably too generous in retrospect. You could speed as much as you could afford.. if you had a bunch of cash you just paid the fine and continued to speed...

Yep was a good thing at the time. I moved across to QLD racked up $1800 worth of speeding fines on my NT licence didn't change over because i would have lost my licence.
Got caught by the same cop 3 times an he was like how do you still have a licence I was like the NT doesn't have a point system so all i have to do is pay the fine, I said I just put all the fines over to spur an pay off $20 a fortnight he was not impressed at all.Im still paying that off. I wonder how i would go trying to get a QLD licence now.

To give you an idea, im in my thirties now and got my Learners in my late 20's (didnt need a car for work as worked in city)

At the time, i had to do the whole 50 hours of learning(not as much as whats needed now though), Red P Pater, Greens etc for 3 years and no powerful cars.

If i can get through it, im sure others can

Suck it up, do the time and do it right

Wow its amazing to read just how strick your licencing is over in aus, Im from NZ and i got my licence 2 days after my 15th birthday, held that for 6 months, passed my ristricted and held that for 6 months than got my full, I had a turbo nissan pulsar at 15, 3 VR4 Galants at 16 (one was dyno'd at 260KW ATW) 17 saw me own a 12second rotary, and a RB30det Powered r32 Skyline. 18 was an Evo 3 then 4.Then numerous other "high performance japs" over the years after, Until i relised that my old man was right the whole time and i should have brought an 8 earlier! Im only 22 now but i must admit that in nz our road toll is far to high due to the fact that we have far to many inexperianced drivers operating machinary that would do 0 - 100 in under 5 seconds flat, theyve only just raised the age to 16 here now, which is a wise move, and also giving a ZERO BAC limit to under 20's which we needed as majority of our deaths was the young ones getting out there and eliminating themselves and others being too drunk and too fast.
But non the less it comes down to education and maturity, i was lucky to have been brought up around cars from a very young age and was racing from 8 years old. But NZ is fast tracking to the ways of australia, which in a way is good. In saying that we still dont even need cats in our cars (unless registered in nz sometime late 2000 i think) and the worst fine you can really get is being 40kph over speed limit (dropped from 50 a few years ago) which incurs a 500??? or something dollar fine and 6 month suspended licence....
