Hi All. Recently I was given a 99' V6 EcoTec VT Commodore as my first car but was concerned if it was even legal for me to drive once I become legal age to drive.

I live in South Australia and love the car even though i'm unable to even drive yet and SA seems to not have any websites to search if a vehicle is banned or allowed unlike other states like NSW. Link a website if anyone finds one please!

If anyone has any suggestions for the vehicle e.g first car modifications, things to stay away from etc. would be appreciated. I'm still doing research all the way until i'm 16

First mods SL springs all round and new shock's this height should keep it legal, nice set of wheels, tint the windows to legal limit in your state, and a cat back exhaust.

Mods not to do.
$3000 dollar stereo system that weighs the car down and makes it slower, then you spend $2000 on performance parts to make up the difference.

(typed this below but had visitors and didn’t hit reply until now... so late to the party )

Read the S.A P1 provisional license rules where you should notice there are tabs on the page. Best to read each tab ;) Especially notice the tab for high powered vehicle restrictions so read it and follow the link within. You should then find your way to more on the rules, definitions and exemptions for high powered vehicles (and the TSB and PDF link within).

1999 V6 commodore is pre Jan 2000 so isn’t under the kw/tonne limits so is legal unless it’s a V8, turbo or supercharged or on the excluded list. At around 146kw and 1530kg, which equates to less than 100kw/tonne, it’s also under the post 2000 kw/tonne limit ;)

Pay particular attention to the requirement for no modifications that may impact power output (engine, intake and exhaust mods are effectively prohibited). Just enjoy the car for what it is, freedom. Don’t risk loosing your license and the freedom it provides by being silly. Learn about vehicle maintenance so you can get the car running at its best (as intended by the maker).

Avoid modifications as it will also attract unwanted attention from police which can quickly become a pain in the rear. Simply keeping the cars stock and puring at its best which be classier than some crass exhaust or suspension mods that you will tire off and cost you lots of $ in the process.

Enjoy the freedom that driving provides and drive safe... Roads are for getting to places, not for playing games and risking your license and thus the freedom to travel

If you want to speed around, buy a go cart and learn to race on a track. It’s much cheaper than silly car mods, carts have exhilarating performance, you can learn to drive fast in a safe track environment, it’s 100% legal and it’s lots of fun.

Good luck in getting your license :)

Just keep the car stock...Forget the big stereo, the big wheels, lowering and big stereo....Cops like to target p platers with these modifications done, even though they are legal...Providing you keep the car clean, drive sensibily they will only glance at you and leave alone

I agree with the stereo mod being typical p plater mod....Having it blasting out while they drive, draws unwanted attention....So avoid the temptation

Do what makes you happy as long as its legal then your fine, your only young once enjoy you youth hood. Get a nice sounding sound system if you like the crisp nice sound with bass you don't have to take it to wank factor, don't go putting Pod filters or anything under the hood that will trigger the cops in giving you a canary, keep away from led bulbs in your headlight lights or any of that colour crap, just remember any wank factor add on cops will pull you over, no wank factor you still get pulled over as your on P's its the way it is, be nice to them and don't give them a reason to stick a canary on your window, all the best.

^ mp3 and horribly compression (thanks Apple) ruined quality music for a generation so a nice sound system may be a moot point

Reality is that there is nothing really wrong with the Calais sound system... so no need for OP to be in the doof doof brigade o_O Hopefully he will show some respect to whoever gave him the car by looking after it well and not treating it like a cheap tarted up hooker

And, any young driver should be cautious a YOLO attitude doesn’t result in a lack of due car while driving which may actually shorten the ‘one’ life span such a saying implies one has

Best to learn correct driver behaviour on the road, then after some years of driving when off his P’s, and it’s easier to get well priced insurance, he can get himself a dream car ;)

Heck, in another 5 years, the 1999 may end up starting it’s upward trend to being a classic (despite only being a V6) ;)
