put up some pics. Nothing you can really do if its peeling of, so only option is to get the affected panels resprayed.

40g car obviously not looked after.

agreed mate i have a 1993 vr calais though it may not be close to 40grand and anyone who spends that much on a first car shouldnt be having a prob with their paint......my guess is bbag didnt garage his car and thats why the paint is screwed yet mine is alot older and look at this for $9500 4 years ago garaged and kept clean the whole time ive had it with very little effort. just goes to show what u spend dont mean **** unless u look after it

P.S if holdens paint was bad then they wouldnt be in buisness if it faded the way ur saying im guess its just lack of respect for a vehicle........(this is in no way meant to be a flame so before replying that its a flame make sure u read this part first all im saying is that it hasnt happened to me and it hasnt happened to my mates vs and vt calais)

The paint fade and peeling of the clear coat is fairly common up here in north QLD on older commodores like VL's, VN's and VP's, but also on many other cars. The summer sun up here really punishes cars though.

I havnt seen many VR/VS's (or newer) with the problem though, so for it to happen to your VS it must have had heavy sun exposure or not much TLC

My VR has the same problem. I've seen LOTS of VN-VR Commys with this problem... apparently (and this is third-hand info) it was simply the kind of paint Holden used in the 90's.

Must have used the same contract for the rear reflectors!

Before blaming the paint what have you done to protect it over the years. You don't always have to garage it but regular waxing or applying a sealnt will see the paint outlast you. My first car was a 95 vs exec. Never saw a garage in it's life but when i sold it in 2006 the paint was still in mint cond. Same goes for my current VS Calais. You could have a $100,000 Merc but unless you look after the paint the same thing will happen. Unfortunately once the clear coat fails the only way to fix it is a respray.

and say that bbags would have to respray for example would anyone know a price for those that have got no idea where to start?

p.s. this may be a good thread to sticky as i have seen this is a common problem ppl keep speaking about.

Well, for those who think i dont look after my paint, in vic, and car has always been garaged. its a pretty rare colour and metailic. called moroccan sands. last of the vs's were sprayed in it before vt series 1. all cars this colour i have ever seen have the same problem. I think its a pretty stupid question weather someone who saved for a car like this would look after it?? Of coarse its been looked after. i have every reciept, invoice and service history for it, and the paint has been well looked after. Holden apparently used some ppg product in that age car that had problems. also, my clear is fine, its oxidizing from underneath. if you look on a certain angle, paint looks amazing, its just round white marks from underneath the paint. Love a real idea, not a meaningless critisism on how i look after my car. Thanks sganro, thats what i heard too. is there any spray painters on here that know why it happened. i really dont believe is maintenance, its holdens quality.

My car has weird chipped paint on the right rear quarter panel. The boot also has permanent marks (looks like rain drop dirt) from sap after being parked under a tree. The paint used on the '93 Holdens isn't the best quality. I might get it repainted one day.

In your first post you say the clear is starting to peal and now you say the clear is fine. Which is it? I don't know if it is possible for a base coat to oxidise underneath a clear coat. I'll have to look into that and get back to you. It may be possible that the clear coat has decided to cloud over. You really need to post some pics or talk to a reputable detailer. Most smash repairers will tell you to just respray but it may not always be necessary.

That 'rain drop dirt' you talk about is water spotting or water etching. What happens is after rain or even when washing the car the water spots evaporate and whats left behind is the minerals or calcium deposits that was in the water to begin with. Those minerals then eat away at the paint and what remains is the etching. It will happen in every car and seems to be more noticable in cars with clear coats because the light doesn't reflect as well through the etching as it should. Ways to avoid this are always dry the car after washing and regularly apply a wax or sealant.

A white 95 VS ... I try to keep it garaged whenever possible, sharing a garage at a unit. full wax n detail at least twice a year and washed at least every 2 weeks and water still beads! ... and when not in the garage i throw a car cover over her

I've heard the paint they used for the VN/VP's wasnt the best but I thought they improved it for the VR's and beyond.

Paint used on factory Holdens has always been quality. The problem is with guys thinking that paint looks after itself. It doesn't. Not in our summer sun, nor when exposed to tree sap etc. The way to healthy happy paintwork is through a consistent effort keeping your car clean and polishing it often. As has already been said, even the best paints (BMW, Merc, Audi etc) will crack up if not looked after, and nothing can stop the chemical reactions with tree sap, bug poo etc :)
