havent seen many pics of vs commodores with a painted interior such as the dash and the speaker pods. but thinking of doing it in mine, seen like bright red but can not say i like that too much does any one have any pic to show me? or thoughts. my colour of the car is pantha mica. Cheers Steak000
aye dude i think i just replied to ur headling thread, well here is the rest of my car I've also painted the top of my dash black since these photos so i'll try to get a pic of it over the next couple of days or so
omg thats awsome that would have taken some time would love to do something like that! nice job wish i knew how to pull everything out and then i would prob give something like that a try, great job!
i reckon go for it mate. pulling everything out is easy, its putting it all back together trying not to scratch anything thats a bit tricky. Theres a how to on here about installing a headunit and thats got details of how to pull most of those bits out. r_i_d_a_h did u take ur dash out when you painted it? i did mine with it still in the car and i couldn't quite get the spray paint the other side of the hump where the speedo is, it just looks a bit patchy. how'd you get aorund that problem. Cheers Jack
yeah i removed the whole dash pad, was a bit fliddly with all the wires still attached to the dash but once they were off it was simple lift and pull out, alot easier as a 2 man job, but i removed the lot by self with no hassles.
yea? i had a look at taking it out but it looked like it was screwed in all over the place, did u follow any guides or anything? i might just get some tyre black to cover it up aye
whats the procedure for painting dash parts ... good clean .. plastic primer colour then a million coats of clear ??? also where do you guys get your vynal from looks like you have done some on the door panel inserts or is that just paint??
always give yourself more time than what you think, i painted my interior & it took me like 4 hours :|
Hey dude, as for cleaning and pre-painting all i did was give it a wipe with a damp cloth and a tiny bit of washing up liquid then let that dry and sprayed vinyl dye straight on top of the vinyl bits and black and white gloss enamel on the plastic bits. Turned out pretty good without the primer, i guess you could use primer if you wanted to. Then for the vinyl roof and inserts i just went to Spotlight and bought some black and white vinyl, i think it was about 15bucks a meter and i got 3m of white and 1 mt of black. That was enough to do my roof, parcel shelf, door inserts and center console arm rest and i still have about half a meter left over. The inserts on the doors are just re-covered ones from a calais or statesman, cant remember which. I think i paid 15bucks for 4 at the wreckers. Give yourself plenty of time and dont rush, make sure you have all your materials before you start and get a little more than what you think you need. Hope all this helps and good luck with it. Wouldnt mind seeing the results once your done too. Let me know if you need any more help. Jack
yeah I was thinking of doing something similar but with more vinyl on the dash is it possible to get the top part of the dash out of the car with airbags installed?? will have to look at my manual when I get home I guess my g/f said she is pretty good with working with vinyl so all I have to do is pull it all out give it to her and put it all back in and spray the parts I want painted ... easy peasy might have a crack at it next weekend .. at least I can put some sound deadning in as well while im there .... 20 cartridges of silicone anyone ?? lol where do you get the vinyl dye from
i got my dye just from bunnings, about 20 bucks a can. Are you meaning your going to take the old vinyl off the dash and put some new stuff on instead? it would give a pretty good finish.
more thinking of just recovering it than removing the old.. im just wondering how to get around the passenger airbag thing the cover is long gone from heat damage so i ripped it of and turfed it in the bin I was planning in my head of vinyl the large top dash piece, non plastic parts of the doors and most of the centre console .... not sure what to do with that annoying crap collecting space below the factory stereo location yet
