I use pandora every day. This is the first I've heard of it being discontinued. I'm listening to it now actually.

What's the best alternative?

That article says Apple Music & Spotify are dominant, so they're probably the safest options if you want your chosen alternative not to go away.
If you're with Optus I think they've got a free 3 month Spotify Premium offer 'til Saturday.

That's interesting, I'm about to sign away 64k for new car with an advertised app, which is about to be useless... hmm, me thinks I'll be onto Holden care tomorrow to see why I should paying for such an app.. and what they will doing about it.
