I actually live in a neighbouring suburb near Cronulla, I don't put the real suburb so I can avoid people having a look at the forums for a shopping list.

But anyway, I wasn't having a go at Perth, just saying the city is relatively small. I can't imagine there are too many high rise penthouses in Perth.

    I was joking...

You would be surprised at what Perth has. Many multi million dollar penthouses and apartments here.

Perth is smaller than Sydney yet the average house price in Perth is 10k more than the average house price in Sydney. This is due to the mining boom.

Yeah I know that one already. Some of my mates are working on the Pilbara mine (I'm pretty sure thats the name) at the moment. Get flights paid for from Sydney, accom, and ludicrous salaries, work 2 weeks on, 1 week off get to go home flights paid on the week off, then repeat it all again. They said the housing around the mines there are like $800,000 for a shack that's barely livable because everyone is so cashed up around the mines.

It's pretty similar in rural areas around NSW and all other mines I suppose. If people can afford more, everything goes up in value.

i live in sorrento and there area is brilliant. bout 20min from the city, 2 min from a beautifull beach, right near a boat harbour, shop close by, lots of parks. surrounding suburbs are nice to like hillarys, marmion, watermans, northbeach and trigg. as for buying and eventually renting out you cant go wrong in these areas. hillarys is practicly all new house's (you can still buy blocks of land there (in an estate tho)). the other areas are a mixture of new and older houses (no crap shacks tho). median house price for these ares is prob round $500,000-$600,000. hope this helps. use "google earth" to have a look at the area.

I have recently moved to Melbourne, and I am renting my house out in Butler (aka South Geraldton). It is a long way from the CBD, by Perth standards. About 1 hour from leaving your door - catching train - arriving at work in city, however when we left we had a queue of people who wanted to rent out the house, or they knew people who wanted to rent out the house. Mostly english people looking for rentals, and out that way you can still buy a large, new, 4x2 for under $500,000.

If distance from the city isnt a concern it is a really good family friendly area, lots of parks, beaches, etc and the ability to rent out later.

If you want to live a bit closer to the city i would agree with 96vscommodore Hilarys, Sorrento, waterman, Marmion, Trigg, etc. anywhere along that coastal area you cant go wrong.

Nedlands, Dalkeith, pepermint grove, The north end of Mosman Park. thats the more affluent areas, Mosman park and Pepermint grove are near good schools. Cottesloe, Swanbourne. That whole area is packed with upperclass snobby ****s that think they are better then the rest of us.

Its a bit of a pain getting into the city from up sorento way, the freeways a bit of an ass during the day

This is about Perth not Canberra, useless post. Minux if you ever move to Venezuela......

I lived in West Perth in near the city, nice views of the river, but a little on the expensive side. Scarborough is really nice as well as the Cott if you want a beach nearby.

Mt Lawley is also a very nice area, we have friends living there, close to city, Northbridge etc.

Perth basically has two arterial roads that come into the city on either side, if you live at say South Perth then you are going to have to commute via one of these roads, or catch a ferry.

Top place to live. I loved Perth.
