Ok i tried a bit of a search around the net on on this forum and came up with nothing si i thought id ask here.

Ive just brought a phone off ebay, after getting screwed twice i finally got one (third time is a charm).

Its a Nokia 6280 on the 3 network and frankly i despise 3.

After reading that 3 will unlock them for free i went there and the tool behind the counter said it was permanlty locked which i know is not the case, then he said he wont unlock it.

Ive searched for every free unlocking system under the sun and could not find one so ive decieded ill pay for...

Imm aware that local markets etc unlock phones, im just wondering if anyone knows how much it roughly costs to go to the markets and get it unlocked (for those in Victoria im heading to the Carribean Markets on Wednesday).

Im a bit broke so im hoping its like 20 bucks. *crosses fingers*

Generally if you go to a 'real' shop (eg, Telstra, Optus, 3 etc), it is between $60 and $80. I know with Virgin, you need to go to a Virgin shop, recharge $80, and they can unlock your phone there.

Yeah 3 flatout said "We wont do it" and i dont think an optus shop etc will unlock a 3 phone.

Other issue with going to 3 is, i got the phone of ebay, so technically im not the owner so i can imagine there being an issue there.

I know the local market (Carribean Market) does them, just unsure of the cost.

I had the same problem with my 3 locked Nokia 6230i

Took it in and they said they'd do it but then said they couldn't cause it's hard coded or something.

Took it to the Nokia shop - not only did they unlock it, they completely re-flashed it with the latest software :D

All Nokia 6280 phones sold by 3 are unable to be unlocked.
I was told that the software in the phone will only work with a 3 simcard. You may be able to get some generic nokia software loaded, you can only try.

The later model 6288, identical to the 6280, is able to be unlocked by 3.

Yeah i really do not like 3, last time i was with them it was just hassle after hassle after hassle. Then i broke the phone cause i couldnt get reception out the front of my house.

How much did it cost you at the nokia shop?

They can be unlocked i know it for a fact its just a matter of finding a place to do it. Ill find out tomorrow off to the markets.

This is taken directly off a Nokia Forum.

"and for future reference this software has never supported the 6280, there are no free softwares out there that can unlock this phone no matter how much you bitch about it. either buy a expensive unlock box and do it you'r self via the test points or pay some one else to do it"

I was asking around at the Carribean Market today to get a phone unlocked from the 3 network. Most places said between $40 to $60.
One guy seemed to know what he was talking about, I think he told me $40 or $45, his store is called J-Lock. He has a website (J-Lock E-Store - Mobile Phone Repairs, Unlocking&Programming, Melbourne, Australia - Home I haven't checked it out yet) and an email addy (jerry@hot.pl).
Another place which also has a store somewhere in the office tower at Knox Shopping Center, ME (Mobile Essentials) Mobile Essentials - Mobile Phone Repair and Unlocking service centre ph:03 9800 2700.
I think both these guys are only there on the sundays when the computer swap meet is on, not the wednesdays.
Hope this helps in some way

Yeah i think thats correct however im unsure.

I remember 2 or 3 years ago now i was with three, and from the word go i was just ****ed around. Even ringing them to confirm things id get indians who didnt know anything and that you could just not understand, then getting things fixed was a nightmare, reception was pathetic. I couldnt get reception unless i was standing outside and if a bird flew over it would drop out. Getting billed for stuff i didnt use nor had subscribed to, then trying to explain it to the previously mentioned indian.

Eventually you had to go instore and deal with the 20 year old guy wearing a pink shirt, i just want to ram my phone into his neck at that stage.

Just want to stay clear of them, ive never had an issue with any of my optus products so thats where im staying.

Before they were Orange they were known as Hutchinson Telecoms and were pretty bad way back then as well so sounds like nothing has really changed

While they do support a lot of worthwile charities and the like they do leave a lot to be desired with their customer service
