Pilot Sport 4 vs Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5

Hi,

I'm after some new tyres and have narrowed it down the Michellin Pilot Sport 4 and the Eagle F1 A5. It seems the PS4 is the tyre to beat for a compromise between sport and comfort, but some info I've come across suggests the PS4 has great grip but is a bit soft in the sidewall resulting in the tyre feeling a bit vague whereas the F1 A5 has similar level of performance but gives better feel. I use mostly my car for the highway not the racetrack, is the PS4 really that soft? (could be a bonus on the abysmal Adelaide roads). Is the F1 A5 worth considering as an alternative, or are all these positive reviews I'm seeing about it simply marketing hype? I've currently got a mixed set of Kumho Majesty Solus KU50 on the front and Pirelli Dragon Sport on the back (they came with the car), I'm already finding this combo to feel pretty vague with regard to steering feedback so want to avoid a vague feeling tyre.

Does anyone have any experience with the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 on a VE commodore SV6 or SS? Any thoughts on whether it performs better/worse/same as the Pilot Sport 4?

Haven't used either, but can say that Eagle F1 supersports definately feel more rigid in the side wall than PS4's on 18's. That combined with their unique rounded sidewall and longitudinal grooves on the upper sidewall (which do come into play) give me better steering feel in the front when pushed hard. More linear and predictable in feel in hard cornering. PS4's, like most tyres I've used on the front seem to progessively ramp up in hard cornering, where you can feel your on the edge of the tyre and that it could let go more suddenly to understeer. Stiffer sidewalls on 45 profile has improved suspension feel also. Don't get the as much interplay between tyres and shocks.

Cheers for the info and the photos, that round sidewall is quite pronounced. I'm thinking I'll try out the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5, it's a newer design and I can get it a little cheaper than the PS4 in any case.

I find the Goodyears perform as well or better than the pilot sport and get more milage. I have the goodyears on my VY, The previous model had cool tread pattern but worn unevenly which caused lots of vibration through the steering. The new A5 looks less radical but sticks like baby **** to a blanket. VY SS with blower.

I ended up going with a set of the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 tyres predominantly because they appeared to have more tread on them than the Pilot Sport 4. Even still, a number of the tread sipes aren't the full depth of the tread which means they'll wear away before the tyre reaches the wear bars. It's frustrating because I suspect wet grip will degrade significantly once these sipes are gone which will occur before the tyre is "worn out". The set I got were only one month old and made in Germany. They seem to be alright so far, nice and quiet in the wet, they feel firmer than the Pirelli Dragon Sport and Kumho Majesty Solus KU50 they replaced.

I did 60,000Ks on my original Bridgestone Turanzas. The ride was definitely a bit harsh. I’ve just changed them for the Michelin Sport 4s and they are noticeably more comfortable. I’ve got nineteen inch wheels.

These were my old Turanza’s. Not bad after 60,000Ks, and the best one left went back on the spare.
