Something that irritates me is the way people say VIN number, PIN number and ATM machine. It's just a PIN, a VIN and an ATM. You don't go around saying automatic teller machine machine. I know its generally understood but it's still not the correct way to say it. Like committing suicide. You can't 'commit' suicide, it's just 'suicide'. Just a bit of venting, I know people will never stop saying these things but everytime I hear it I think FFS. I'm trying to teach my kids the correct way of saying things because I believe grammar and pronunciation indicate that you take a bit more notice when learning things so you are going to get more opportunities than people who say 'nuh' or 'nuffin' or even 'everyfing'. Sometimes ignorance can be bliss but ignorance also p***** me off. (The preceding rant does not depict any actual person or event on this forum)
Well I tried to instigate Pi number when people were using the EFTPOS and they were like WTF you talking about....
Technically it is commiting suicide, as by law your not allowed to kill yourself, and 'suicide' is an offence lol guess they should re word it to 'attempting to commit suicide' although i guess you can't face charges of killing yourself, unless you've killed yourself, to which you'd be dead, so you couldn't anyway
3.14159265358979323846264338327950288419716939937510 Just ask for the PIN, or VIN and dont say number at all
Exactly my point, people understand what you mean when you say PIN but they say PIN number......:bang:
Actually the act itself is suicide. You cant attempt to commit, you either attempt suicide or you succeed. You either do it or not. If you attempt suicide then you are attempting the act, if you succeed then you kill yourself, not commit the act of killing yourself. It's like driving a car, you 'drive', you don't commit driving. The same can be said of murder, you kill someone-'you murder' them, you don't commit murder on them. You can 'commit murder' however because you are describing the act. Where as suicide is the direct reference to the act. So by killing yourself you 'suicide'.
And this is going exactly where I didn't want it to....I was venting, not conducting an English lesson....

lol, read what i said again. Killing yourself is commiting suicide, which is whats against the law. so theres no such thing as attempted murder?
so if you try to kill yourself and fail do you go to jail? or in america... do you get sent to death?
Theres nothing that says attepted suicide is an offence with a conviction, but there are laws somewhere about suicide. i've never looked into it, i'm just going by 'tachnicalities'
you commit the act of suicide. if you succeed then you have succeeded in your attempt and have committed or committed to suicide. Same as marriage... you commit to marriage. needless to say commitment isn't always successful. It is funny how we say things isn't it.
so basiclly if someone kills themselves they 'committed' suicide, but if they dont succeed they 'attempted' suicide?
i would guess so. any deeper and i will get confused. Maybe it is more like murder than we think. Marriage too. wow more connections between marriage and murder. (**waits for more discrimination feedback**)
If they succeeded in killing themselves, then the act of what they did is suicide. They killed themselves, they didn't 'commit' suicide. Like I said of the car, you drive, you don't commit drive. Attemped suicide is trying to kill yourself. You don't say 'he attempted to suicide'. Once a person has succeeded then that in itself is the act....suicide. When you say commit suicide it's like saying 'he is doing it', when in fact it's not suicide until it's done.
if you attempt suicide then you are committing a crime. there are a few people on here who should be committed
