Honestly, not for long at all.

Change the axle oil to 140W gear oil, as it'll quieten down the noise and suspend bearing particles within the oil. The longer you leave it, the worse it's going to get as the contaminants could very well affect the other components within the housing. Take a look at my build thread, page 5. I got lucky.

Order a differential bearing kit now.

That would be one way to go about it, but I wouldn't leave it too long. Avoid excessive acceleration and speeds and burnouts/skids/drifts.

    Good luck anyway.

Pinion bearing on the way out can give a hum/whine coming on around 70 - 80kph.

Mine was whining constantly at every speed. The pic of the worn out bearing is mine too.

For reference, I drove mine with an absolutely flogged pinion bearing for about 4 months. The only reason why I got it replaced so soon was because my sound system started having problems drowning out the annoying grinding noise.

When I had it pulled out there were so many tiny metal flakes all mixed in with the oil. The pinion bearing itself had a few surface pits and the bearing cups were completely scuffed. The axle bearings were still okay though.

In saying that, I wouldn't recommend driving it for that long unless you plan on replacing everything. Those metal flakes wore the spider gears out in the single spinner center and the crown and pinion lost a fair amount of that black hardening layer too.

meh, mang it till you hear the bang when it finally spits a tooth off the pinion or crown and stops moving..... if it's let go long enough and driven long enough while whining/wearing then there's sfa chance a new bearing is going to help, only so much a few shims will do to realign a worn out mess............

c'mon alloy, if the doctors at my local tri-star can google anything asked for a sure fire answer...... then surely a mechanic can diagnose over the interwbs (and you speaka da english)

I took it to a couple of mechanics & they both said that it's the pinion bearings.

Like spud_22 mine has a whine at all speeds, just gets louder the faster I go. It's quite loud over 70klms, goes right through your ear, very annoying.

"It's f@%*#d mate" is the diagnostic term needed for this situation.
