gonna replace me uni joints in the tail shaft tomorrow ,hopefully, and was wondering if its possible to check if the pinion bearing nut is tight. Like i know how to tighten a bolt/nut etc but with the pinion how do you do it? i do have a diff whine and want to make sure its tight....is there a certain torque setting for it? cheers
yeah but i seriously dought it is loose. Diff whine could well be old oil as you probably have not changed it like most of australia. While changing oil it is worth taking the back cover off and looking at the wear pattern on the gears to make sure all is good there. If you look around or in your manual you will be able to find a guide on how the wear pattern shoud look.
Don't touch the pinion nut mate....It's tightened from the factory to pull up the crush tube to get the right backlash on the gears. If you touch the nut, you will probably make things worse!
ah ok thanks guys wasn't too sure on that..as for teh oil it was changed about a year ago however it was changed with some valvorline diif oil that was years and years old (older then me ...18...but was new oil though...never used) so i am changing it in a few days just to be sure (mobil diff oil) and while im in there gonna make sure all bolts that are accessible are tight to what they should be (excluding the pinion) however what if there is too much back lash? can it be tightened then as there is a bit of a clunk from diff when i back off and put foot on throttle sometimes.. thanks heaps
