I am changing the head gaskets in my vs Ecotec and noticed that the number three piston does not sit square to the top deck of the block( 5mm lower on one side). There is no scoring of bore and the engine turns over by hand with no noise. Is it likely Holden machined a piston that wasn’t perfect or has this piston deformed after close to 300 thou kms. Cheers.

Email the photo to yourself and select large when it resizes, easy as.

Is it only a problem on one cylinder?

There is no play in piston, I have a tap with a hammer and block of wood on the high side to see if it squared up but no movement. Just happily travels up and down with the rest of them. The compression tester I borrowed befor whipping heads off didn’t fit into engine bay so results were no help. I will probably try again without the exhaust manifolds on before I am finished. It will have to be okay as I am not ready to pull motor yet. Just maintaining the old girl.
