Hey all,

I picked up a wrecked 5l ute the other day in hopes of it being a donor vehicle for a future conversion.

I’m currently in the process of putting it all back together to see if it all actually works but i’m having some difficulty identifying where some of the plugs are meant to go. I tried the wiring diagrams but it’s all like Chinese to me.

These plugs come down the right side of the engine bay and sit around where the air box would be. I’m pretty certain the one with the purple on it is for the MAF sensor but I have no idea what the other three are for.

Anybody got any ideas?

1 - MAF
2 - Intake air temp (90% sure)
3 - Ignition module
4 - ignition module/Dizzy (there are 2 the same)

Be very careful if going aftermarket - very common for them to not work correctly out of the box or fail very quickly. Genuine/reconditioned modules are generally the go.

Always keep a spare in the boot regardless of what you have.

Thanks for the heads up.

I just ordered a cheapie off of eBay. I have no idea of the status of this engine so I’m trying to spend as little as possible at the moment just in case I decide to bail on this whole thing but if it does work, i’ll order a genuine Bosch part.

Basically lay harness out you'll see it match up to MAF plug then IAT sensor in top airbox lid & last 2 plugs behind it to Ignition Module usually on strut tower.

If all good use wire or split for pins 5 & 6 above brake pedal to check for fault codes.

Does the intake air temp sensor need to be connected for the engine to run? This thing doesn’t currently have an airbox just a dodgy pod filter attached to the maf with some silicone hose. I’m more than happy to correct all these issues, but I really want to hear the engine run before I commit to throwing money at it.

Doesn’t need iat or maf connected to run, but won’t run very will without them and will want to stall.

If it all works with the cheap module, get a good one and keep the cheapie in the boot as a backup

Think they need maf connected to run but iat disconnected will just run rough with intermittent fault....one or the other, vaguely remember torrie had that issue when did torrie conversion.

It will run like crap with pod filter versus cooler air from factory airbox.

If cant find vs s3 airbox just grab vr/s v8 & fit IAT to top lid....or can drill then glue it into tube betweem maf & pod or into base of pod....drawback is higher air temps will mess with tune.

I guess I can always pinch the airbox from my v6 ute just for the sake of testing. My understanding is they both use the same maf. With some luck I might see the bits i’ve ordered in a week or so and then i’ll have a better idea of where I stand with this thing.

Thanks guys
