Idler pulleys are pretty cheap, and easy to replace.
Don't know how long it'll go for, depends how bad it is. Get it fixed.

Ouch! I thought changeover's were about $150? did you get a spank'n new one?

I was going to take my chances at the wreckers for an alternator... ~$50

Top stuff :) I'm thinking about doing the same. When I had the 'ol VK I went through about 3 alternators over about 2 years... all the alternators were from local wreckers (then again I'm thinking there was another problem there... dunno.)

How loud was the rattling noise? could you hear it from the drivers seat if you had the window down? I can hear rattling with the windows down and I'm very sure my alternator's on it's way out (sounds like a washing machine from the 60's when spinning it without the belt on). I'm just hoping it's the alternator... and only the alternator...
