I wonder why governments don't just threaten to take over these unwanted factories and put out an expression of interest to see if anyone genuine wants to come in and do something with the skilled workforce on a profit sharing agreement.

Build mobile homes? not the luxury kind for recreation, but the basic kind for living and driving to a new location where the seasonal jobs are available.

I did not read one "new" idea. It's already being done in other parts of the world, perhaps the innovation is adapting our automotive industry to it. It will be demand though, our population can't support an Australian made vehicle now that shipping has become so cheap.

2016 saw 17.55 million new cars sold in the US compared to almost 1.18 million in Australia. We don't have enough people to buy cars to support a home grown manufacturer.

Our inability to compete sustainably on price with imported vehicles is an issue.
But I like the first idea:
Autonomous ride-sharing city car

A small ride-sharing pod to navigate through busy central business districts such as Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or Perth could become a new hallmark of Australia’s now homogenous vehicular landscape. Three versions are envisioned: A multiple passenger version with two sliding rows of seats, a single passenger version that can lane split and negotiate bike lanes, and a cargo carrying version for courier duties. They are electrically powered, with a battery pack under floor and a small LPG range extender in some models. This could be either a publicly funded transport initiative, or part of a private ride-sharing scheme.
