2008 SV6
Hi Everyone
I have a 2008 SV6 that has had the gearbox fail. Im looking at using a 2nd hand unit and have access to a 2011 vehicle to strip parts from which has very low Kms and was maintained very well but written off with a rear end impact. The damage was so insignificant, but the insurance wrote it off and the owner got it back from the insurer when they knew I needed a donor car.

the fitting bolt positions appear to be the same for the gearbox but has anyone used the newer version in an older frame? I suspect I will need to use the Transmisson Module from the newer car as well but other than that would there be any issues?

Alternatively, My car has done in excess of 450,000 kms and the donor one has only 60,000 on the clock any thoughts on if it would be possible to use both engine and gearbox in the olde frame?

Before anyone asks the damaged frame is not really suitable for rebuild as someone else has taken the seats and most of the inner plastics before I got to it.

Thanks for any thoughts

If you have the five speed auto it will be a nightmare. A manual conversion would be easier.

2008 SV6
Probably not worth doing. It‘s simple to bolt up but the electronics are completely different.

Ah I see .. I take it the default gearbox for the 2011 was the 6 speed then? I was not looking to upgrade the spec just get the car running and thought it might just be a newer version of the original looking externally. I suspected there would be problems with the electronics so thanks for confirming .. guess ill keep looking for a 2008 version.

Kinda feel like it might be time to retire the old girl but there isn't much out there that I like to change to, such a shame that GM took such a terrific brand from us, it was happening for years though with them not bringing the SUV's etc that people were going nuts on and of course the crazy attitude that we have here in Oz that cheaper is best .. sometimes I wish people would just consider the whole picture not just the initial costs. But then that's a whole other rant isn't it .. thanks again for your advice.

The changeover for series 2 VE was 2011 so it’s likely to have the 6 speed in it. The 5 speed is rare as rocking horse shite as it was basically only fitted to VZ and early VE SV6’s.

I ended up retiring my SV6 as I wasn’t going to spend over $5k to rebuild the box in it as that can be money down the drain as rebuilding them reliably seems to be problematic (just ask @Fu Manchu).

Ironically it would actually be easier to convert the car to a manual than from a 5 speed to 6 speed auto, at least that’s my assessment anyway.

I didn’t want anything other than another VE as I liked my old SV6, so I bought my current SSV with a manual transmission so it will outlast the heat death of the universe!

Manual gearboxes don’t shite themselves (and the TR6060 manual box is everywhere anyway) and the early manual V8’s don’t have all the cylinder deactivation shitfuckery that can be unreliable.

The six speed auto appeared in the series 1.5 in 2009. Series 1 externally but with the direct injection and six speed auto.

Correct,
I purchased a new VE S1 Berlina with a 3.0L SIDI, 10/2009 build, Delivery date 22/11/2009,
and it had a 6 speed auto.
