First post, hope to find some ideas from all the VE owners out there?

I am planning on installing a radar detector in an 07 Calais, with my preference to mount it to (below) the rear view mirror - I dislike suction cups. I don't want loose cables hanging from the unit to the lighter power source, so first thought is to route cables through the lining down to a power source via the forward pillars. This option is fraught with danger as I will need to negotiate the air bag issue..

After looking at the mirror mount, there are lights etc in the roof area so 'assume' there is some kind of power source there? Has any one tapped into this source of power successfully? Any other ideas for mounting/powering the unit would be appreciated?

Great forum, already pointed me in the right direction on a number of issues,

Cheers

There should be a constant 12v at the lights near the mirror it's just a case of how much power will your detector use.

I wouldn't go to much effort mate as the coppers will pick you up for it as they have radar detector detectors and they will take it off you when they find it.

The best spot would be in the front bumper with a remote screen for viewing inside the car

Not worth the effort. They're pretty useless especially againsts hand held guns.
Try not speeding, it's cheaper in both fuel and fines :)

just buy a radar detector detector jammer, all set!!

but seriously, id just run the extra wire down to the smokers pack plug behind the radio on drivers side. if you pull the a pillar trim off, from memory theres already wires that run down it, just follow them, and you wont have any airbag troubles

If you care about how much fuel you burn, buy a Prius.

suction cups and the cigarette lighter is the easiest to hide if you get pulled over for a random check.

Anyone that feels the need for a radar detector deserves to be caught, fined and taken off the road.
