today a bloke I know showed up with a leaking radiator and a new radiator we changed it and washed the front of the motor a bit. After we got it back together the power steering pump is howling and whining I didn't notice it when he appeared, what could we have done to cause it? We unclipped the fans and shroud pushed them forward so we could get the radiator out and the new 1 in. I'm just trying to work out how we could of caused it if we did. We didn't bend or kink any pipes that we can see or know of breaking any thing. Needless to say hardly anything apart from minor services has ever been done to it has more than 180k on the clock.
First thing i did when i got this car was clean the engine bay, and i never had any issues with the ps pump. I did hear it make a hell of a lot of noise when i changed the radiator too, because it temporarily sucked in some air. It fixed itself after that that though and didn't take very long at all. Make sure the hoses to the tank aren't blocked etc, hopefully no water ended up getting in the tank.
Hi the_boozer, I know this might seem a bit crude, but with the engine running and the squeeling noise is really going at it,reach in from the battery side and spray the underside of the drive belt(the FACE side that runs directly on the pulley) with silicone spray, only needs a squirt or two as I know when coolant gets anywhere on the belt or pulleys, the noise it makes you would swear the arse is going to drop out of the idler pulleys or anything associated or driven by the accessorie belt. The noise I had when I dropped, flushed and changed my coolant was painfull, simply because when the bottom hose is removed it floods over the crankshaft pulley.I simply sprayed a small amount of silicone spray on the bottom pulley whilst engine was ticking over and "wella" instantly the noise went and has never returned.I dont use wd40,crc etc because of the oil/distillate content. Cheers
it turned out we put a hair line crack in the power steering reservoir and air the fluid was bubbling up we replaced the reservoir and hose to the pump. that shut it up . cheers for your replys.
