I have power steering fluid leaking from a crack on the far left side of the AC condenser. My AC is still cooling. Question is why does the power steering line run through the AC condenser and also can it be bypassed around the AC condenser? I have been told that my AC condenser has to be replaced and it cant be bypassed!!???
My car is a VE SSV 2009 Commodore
    Thankyou in advance

No. The power steering fluid runs from the pump through a rubber hose which is connected through the AC condenser through a steel pipe and its all in one. I think its a stupid idea personally.

I have been to 2 different mechanics now and they have both said to replace the whole AC condenser as it is all in one not two separate parts.

They'r right. It's a 2 in 1 comp. unit. Not expensive.. Easy to do.

OK, so this is what it looks like:
    GVE-33000.jpg
Only holden knows why they used that particular setup for cooling the power steering fluid
Looking at a few pics of the A/C condenser with the inbuilt cooler, I can't see why it can't be bypassed and an external cooler fitted....Unless there is going to be an issue with clearance for the hoses and the aftermarket cooler itself

From a cost point of view there'll probably be bugger all difference with staying original or fitting an aftermarket cooler.
Just some very roughly guessed prices.....
New condenser $150....A/C regas $150....plus couple of hours labour $200. So around $500
    Good quality oil cooler $100 - $200....plus couple of hours labour $200...Consumables....$50. So around $350 - $450

Either way it's one of those niggling issues that will need to be fixed sooner rather than later.
You really don't want to run your power steering pump out of fluid

I'd just put an external cooler on it and save the headaches of getting a/c regassed.

Yes this is exactly what mine looks like. This issue has been going on for a while now and at first my original mechanic couldnt find the leak so they cleaned it and found a crack in the pump so I had to save for that to be replaced but they didnt look past that and whalla a week later it was still leaking. They should have checked the whole system. Ultra Tune are replacing the condenser tomorrow so hopefully it will all be fixed. They atleast checked the whole system not like the other mob did ( Bridgestone Select).

Hi There,So I have the dreaded P/s oil leak on the nipple into AC condenser.
I am going aftermarket/separate cooler, but I was wondering if in that case I needed to evacuate the AC from refrigerant?Or can I just remove the P/S pipes and run through new setup and maybe plug old nipples? Thanks

That design would be used to speed up the assembly process.

Yep, just add an external cooler

No degassing needed. Plug/cap the holes to keep it looking tidy.

Which VE's did these condensers come out on?
My Redline and Maloo have different condenser's with the PS cooler shown in post #2.

I have the Chev Lumina SS V8 6.0.Which was the Commodore Ve ss series 1 with l76 motor if I am not mistaken. The condenser and P/s cooler is all in one as per the second Pic.
