Don't worry, this isn't another guy asking how to do it.

This thread is going to serve as a journal for my project. It's in a working state, so the first few posts are going to be older entries from my FB feed.

Here goes:

30 JUNE
This has kept me busy for the past 5 weeks. I installed a 6L50 (code 1WBA) automatic transmission from a VE Commodore into my venerable VZ Ute. I was quite sick of the 4L60Es. I was on #4 already.
I've flirted with the idea a custom controller for a while, and when this 4L60 **** itself I went for it and got a 6L50.
It cost a bit in prototyping. I had to manufacture a tail shaft. It needed its own flexplate and a new transmission cooler. Had some electronic problems at the start.
I studied a fair bit for this project before engaging in it. My neighbours are auto trans specialists and Dad was a mechanic, while I have experience in programming and electronics.
The code is written in C++. It's a bit barebones as of current, but it handles shifts fairly well.
We did all our testing on a hoist before it was ready for a road test.
As for the results - it's ******* fast. First is very steep and throws me back in my seat. Second and third have really good response too. It's been on a variety of road types already -- handling them all well.
It still looks like a heap of **** so give me a few days to tidy it up

Early stages of test still, but I'm very proud to have it this far with my 6L50 conversion into a VZ.
Here you can see custom TCM's display and the gearbox reacting to the shifts I command from the paddle shifts.
The flaring on the middle gears can be optimised out in software. The current version is still very rudimentary - providing only one shift model for all 9 shifts (P, R, N included). I do have the better software ready, but haven't enabled it yet for testing reasons.
The speedo is disabled, since the speed calibration CPU hasn't been installed. We are using multiple GPS speedos to ensure we stay within limits.
Overall, I didn't think I'd actually make it this far

Honestly, I've done stuff all on this project since the last update. Life has gotten in the way and all that. I'm resuming development now.
Alas, as you can see I've gotten rid of all shift flares from the previous video. It's a smoother and quicker ride now. The speedo has been disabled due to a suspected software error (seems to be serial comm problems). Tomorrow I'll put the car on the hoist and do some investigating.
The new TCM hardware is nearing completion in its design stage. I need the results from tomorrow before I can finish it. It's a significantly smaller, more powerful board that includes a 32 bit processor and CAN interface. It includes some safety enhancements too.
Due to the radical change in hardware, it'll take a bit for me to develop the new software. Most of the shift handling and automatic-shifting code is fairly high level which will make the process quicker.
I'm switching the display over to literally anything else. I haven't made my mind on getting some basic OLED modules or using small touchscreen LCDs

Good going.
I've put the 6l50 into my vt v6 ecotec.

My 6l50 is the obra, out of a ve s2.

Using vf shifter.

I have the vf steering wheel with paddle shifter, (not on the car at the moment). I have a mock up car. So far, l have the steering shaft adapted for it. Still trying to work out the airbag.

Still working on the vf steering wheel.

While the project does work okay from an AVR Arduino, it's a bit prototype and I'm quickly pushing against hardware limits. I need more processing power and precision to get more out of the gearbox. The following design is a 32 bit STM based system. It's only 108x143mm, just under half the size of its predecessor. It includes a CANbus, ALDL bus to interface to displays. I'm consulting someone else on possibly using the ALDL bus to display transmission range and gear on the dash cluster. It can be done.

Otherwise, I'm making a few different displays. I have designs from 7 digit displays and alphanumeric to a full 2.8" touch screen LCD but it's a bit over kill.
It includes a dedicated USB bus for quicker and easier tuning. I'll be able to route the cable to my glovebox and plug in if I feel the need to change the tuning. If I release this, the tuning software will be available for free.

This design isn't final. This image was rendered before routing was done. I need to move some components around and re-route the traces.

Are you using the PCS2560 to interface to the transmission? I'm using the VZ shifter and I've found it works. I have paddle shift, which I simply nicked the switches and clockspring from a SV6.

NOTE

This doesn't interface to the 6 speed TCM. It replaces it. I modified the transmission so that I can directly control the solenoids myself. This is a ground-up implementation.

What adapter plate are you using? Some people are wanting these for some Ecotecs.

Yes l'm using pcs 2650 to interface.

It takes your tps & rpm signals, then tells the tcm what to do.
