Saw this on facebook the other weeks, nice going so far. This sort of thing may also be useful to people doing LS conversions in older vehicles too as many use VT-Z setups and are then limited to 4L60e's too.
Thank you! :)
Most interest I've gotten is from LS owners. I just need a car and 6L80/90 to see if it all works. A lot of yanks could be interested too.

I've found out that I can continue development. The new hardware is coming along well. I'm almost ready to send it off for manufacturing. Manufacturing and delivery will take 2-3 weeks. In the mean time I can work on software, of which I've completed 20%.

I'm replacing that hideous white-on-blue LCD screen with a smaller OLED display. OLED does seem a bit excessive, but I found it to be the most cost-effective and compact solution. I'm adding modes that can record 0-60km/h, 0-100km/h, 0-160km/h times, (maybe quarter mile time), top speed and other stuff.

Attached are some preliminary renderings:

Don't worry, this isn't another guy asking how to do it.

This thread is going to serve as a journal for my project. It's in a working state, so the first few posts are going to be older entries from my FB feed.

Here goes:

30 JUNE
This has kept me busy for the past 5 weeks. I installed a 6L50 (code 1WBA) automatic transmission from a VE Commodore into my venerable VZ Ute. I was quite sick of the 4L60Es. I was on #4 already.
I've flirted with the idea a custom controller for a while, and when this 4L60 **** itself I went for it and got a 6L50.
It cost a bit in prototyping. I had to manufacture a tail shaft. It needed its own flexplate and a new transmission cooler. Had some electronic problems at the start.
I studied a fair bit for this project before engaging in it. My neighbours are auto trans specialists and Dad was a mechanic, while I have experience in programming and electronics.
The code is written in C++. It's a bit barebones as of current, but it handles shifts fairly well.
We did all our testing on a hoist before it was ready for a road test.
As for the results - it's ******* fast. First is very steep and throws me back in my seat. Second and third have really good response too. It's been on a variety of road types already -- handling them all well.
It still looks like a heap of **** so give me a few days to tidy it up

I’m impressed bro this means I could covert my VE to a 6 speed I guess

This is the new display for the controller.

On the left shows range. It can show P(ark), R(everse), N(eutral), D(drive, automatic shifting) and M(anual). The number indicates the current gear (1-6).

In the middle, the thermostat and snowflake indicate a cold transmission. The needle on the thermostat rises with transmission temperature. If the transmission is close to overheating, a flame icon will be displayed.

Below that is "PWR". This indicates the current shift profile. Atm it's power, but there are also economy and standard modes. This will adjust various parameters, such as when shifts occur, gear hunting elimination, gear hold and stuff like that.

The second most right box is actually a progress bar that fills according to how close the transmission is to an upshift. Therein, this controller will show you when it's getting ready to shift.

The right most box is the shift progress bar. It fills according to the current progress of a transmission shift (up or down).

The new transmission shift core has been simulated and passed its tests.

I'm currently integrating it with the new hardware. Dad and I have been discussing some new features that will make it more responsive and a better drive for those who push their Commodores harder.

The controller has been run on the test bench. Tweaked some RTOS settings. It's rock solid and stable. I'll be installing it into my car in the next few days, if weather conditions permit.

Slug powered VZ, Cross 8 VZ, VE Calais & ya mum.
Thanks for posting on the forum!
Really love how this stuff is slowly falling out of your head and becoming such a useful product.

I know that there is a controller out of the US for this. However, from what I can tell it suits early analogue '04 VZ's but not the VZ's that had digital(?) CanBus? that came later with 05 onward.

Will your set up work on both types of interfaces?

I have plans to get a 6 speed into a Cross 8 but I need to find someone to design a transfer case adaptor.
Once that is done, that adaptor can be used for BMW which shares the same transfer case. Then they have a way of retaining factory AWD option for their popular LS conversions in Europe.

This was one option used: http://www.torqueup.net/blog/2020/05/03/vt-vz-6-speed-auto-6l80e-conversions/

This was a great conversion as well: https://forums.justcommodores.com.au/threads/pre-ve-6-speed-auto-conversion.267342/

Yeah, look, I'm going to be frank here, I've heard all about that controller and I'm quite sick of hearing about it. Two pages of my thread are already dedicated to that glorified CANbus interface. That's all it is. It only takes your throttle position and rev signal and emits CAN bus packets for the stock GM transmission controller *inside* the transmission. That's it. It doesn't control solenoids or do much at all.

My controller is a proper controller. It bypasses the stock controller and takes direct control of the solenoids and sensors.

I didn't want to pay $999 USD for just an interface when my whole conversion only cost $1200 AUD and I can do more with it.

This is running in an '07 VZ. It's designed to be as flexible as possible, supporting up to VE Omega or can run on a vehicle without an ECU / fuel injection.
