the thing on the end of the fuel rail is the regulator. there should be a fuel line coming of the end and a vacuum line from the side to the intake manifold. the only way to check the regulator is with a fuel pressure gauge. tell us the readings with the engine running at idle and the engine off also

Highly likely ur fuel regulator. I had the same issue with my replacement engine. I have to crank it and accelate to get it to start and a big bloom of white smoke would come out the back. Changed the regulator and starts first time all the time now.
